USAF: June 1 airpower summary: C-17s support coalition forces
Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 75 close-air-support missions
  • In Afghanistan, an F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131) strafed an enemy compound in Lashkar Gah (Google Maps) with its 20mm Vulcan cannon after an Afghan National Police convoy came under fire from anti-Afghan forces taking cover in the structure. The enemy personnel in the building had been launching RPGs and directing automatic fire at Afghani policemen until the strafes put a stop to it. Nearby, a Coalition aircraft flew a show of force to cover the withdrawal of other Afghan security forces after a similar enemy attack.
Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR)
  • 19 USAF ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. In addition, 4 U.S. Navy and Coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

Coalition Airpower conducted 76 close-air-support missions
  • In the vicinity of Qal-E-Naw (unknown), an F/A-18F (VFA 103) carried out a show of force over a residential compound after friendly troops nearby began taking mortar fire from that area. The barrage ended after the maneuver, avoiding the need to employ an air strike.
  • F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 83 or 131) patrolling over Lashkar Gah (Google Maps) flew shows of force as a warning to anti-Afghan forces personnel who had temporarily taken control of a town. Enemy personnel had vacated the town by the time a friendly unit arrived a short while later. Nearby, a show of force from another F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131) prevented a confrontation between a group of anti-Afghan personnel and a smaller force of Coalition troops. The unit achieved its objectives without any violence taking place.
  • An F/A-18F (VFA 103) performed a show of force to discourage suspected IED emplacers digging along the side of a road. The individuals ran off when the aircraft flew overhead.

  • Near Orgun (Google Maps), an F/A-18F (VFA 103) flew a show of force and expended flares, stopping enemy fire from anti-Afghan shooters against a convoy on a ridgeline.

    * Perhaps, the mission occurred in Oruzgan (Google Maps).
  • F/A-18Fs (VFA 103) used a GBU-12 and strafing passes to disable a van rigged with a car bomb after enemy forces tried to attack a supply convoy with it near Musa Qala/Musa Qaleh (Google Maps). Gunmen had fired from the windows of the van as it had accelerated toward the convoy, its vehicle driver ignoring both visual signals and warning shots fired from the convoy. After the driver was killed in the strike, two individuals fled from the van but were captured by security forces.
  • USAF F-15Es and Navy F/A-18Es (VFA 143) performed shows of force near Qalat (Google Maps) to drive off anti-Afghan forces attacking a friendly convoy. The lead vehicle of the convoy had been hit by a roadside bomb causing the entire convoy to come under fire, prompting the convoy commander to call for air support. The aircraft provided overwatch to allow the convoy to safely withdraw as enemy activity stopped once they arrived.
  • A Super Hornet (VFA 103 or 143) flew a show of force and expended flares after a dismounted coalition patrol discovered an IED, preventing an ambush. Enemy personnel ran from the area immediately after the aircraft passed overhead.
  • Near Lashkar Gah (Google Maps), F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 83 or 131) conducted shows of force, expending flares, to prevent anti-Afghan forces attacks on friendly convoys. Aircraft performed a show of force over a road junction where enemy forces were detected setting up for an ambush, as well as over a road chokepoint where a group of men had surrounded an Afghan convoy vehicle. In both cases, hostile personnel ran away from the area after the aircraft arrived on scene.
