Air-operations - U.S. Navy air-operations as part of Coalition Airpower

CVW 7 that consists of VFA 143 (F/A-18E), VFA 103 (F/A-18F), VFA 83, VFA 131 (F/A-18C[N]), VAQ 140 (EA-6B), VAW 121 (E-2C NP) and HS 5 (SH-60F, HH-60H) is conducting air-supports for Operation Enduring Freedom.

  • Gulf of Aden (May 23-29, 2009) - During May 23-29, The JMSDF antipiracy maritime force achieved following escort missions in the Gulf of Aden.

    20th escort mission for 2 vessels May 24-26.
    21st escort mission for 4 vessels May 26-28.

    Thus far, the maritime force which consists of JS Samidare (DD 106), JS Sazanami (DD 113), four helis, SBU and JCG officers has achieved 21 escort missions for 68 Japan linked commercial vessels in all. Both destroyers are assigned to Escort Division 8.

  • Rota, Spain (May 29, 2009) - USS Nashville (LPD 13) arrives in Naval Station Rota, Spain, after supporting Africa Partnership Station. Africa Partnership Station is a multinational initiative developed by Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Africa to work with U.S. and international partners to enhance maritime safety and security in West and Central Africa.

  • East China Sea (May 29, 2009) - USS Cowpens (CG 63) as one of the escorts for USS George Washington (CVN 73) performs a replenishment at sea with USNS Richard E. Byrd (T-AKE 4).

    * Byrd is deployed to Pacific Partnership instead of USS Dubuque (LPD-8).
    * George Washington also conducted a RAS with Byrd same day.
    * GW departed Yokosuka May 20 for a combat operations efficiency (COE) evaluation.

  • Santo Thomas, Guatemala (May 29, 2009) - Sailors aboard USS Doyle (FFG 39) conducts a VBSS exercise with Guatemalan marines. Doyle is deployed as part Southern Seas 2009 and will work with partner nations to enforce maritime security and interoperability in the U.S. 4th Fleet area of responsibility.

    * The Frigate departed La Ceiba, Honduras May 26 following a five-day port visit.

May 29, Australian Defence Force announced RAN HMAS Warramunga (FFH 152) and RAAF AP-3C aircraft are scheduled to join CTF 151 for an antipiracy operation.
