Air-operations - U.S. Navy air-operations as part of Coalition Airpower

CVW 7 that consists of VFA 143 (F/A-18E), VFA 103 (F/A-18F), VFA 83, VFA 131 (F/A-18C[N]), VAQ 140 (EA-6B), VAW 121 (E-2C NP) and HS 5 (SH-60F, HH-60H) is conducting air-supports for Operation Enduring Freedom.

Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 77 close-air-support missions
  • An F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131) conducted a show of force and expended flares to stave off an enemy attack against Afghan National Army troops under heavy fire near Bagram (Google Maps). A medevac flight along with the Afghan troops was pinned by enemy fire which ceased when the strike aircraft arrived on scene. The aircraft remained overhead to provide overwatch until friendly forces regrouped.
  • USAF F-15Es and Navy F/A-18Es (VFA 143) flew shows of force in Bagram, Ghazni (Google Maps) and Asadabad (Google Maps) to prevent enemy attacks against humanitarian and reconstruction convoys. The convoys proceeded on their missions without enemy interference.

USS Nimitz conducts a COMPUTEX for an upcoming scheduled deployment

  • Off the coast of southern California (May 27, 2009) - USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11 are conducting a Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPUTEX) off the coast of Southern California in preparation of a scheduled deployment to the western Pacific Ocean.

    Nimitz CSG Carrier Strike Group (CSG) is comprised Nimitz, CVW 11, USS Chosin (CG 65), USS Sampson (DDG 102), USS Pinckney (DDG 91), USS Higgins (DDG 76) and USS Rentz (FFG 46).

    CVW 11 is consists of VFA 41, VFA 14, VFA 97, VFA 86, HS 6, VAQ 135, VRC 30 and VAW 117.

  • Palma de Majorca, Spain (May 27, 2009) - USS Bataan (LHD 5) as flagship of Bataan ARG/22nd MEU arrives in Palma de Majorca, Spain May 27. Bataan ARG/22nd MEU is on scheduled deployment in U.S. 5th, 6th Fleet AOR.
