Air-operations - U.S. Navy air-operations as part of Coalition Airpower

CVW 14 that consists of VFA 115 (F/A-18E), VFA 22 (F/A-18F), VFA 25, VFA 113 (F/A-18C[N]), VAW 113 (E-2C NP), VAQ 139 (EA-6B), VRC 30 Det. 1 (C-2A) and HS 4 (SH-60F, HH-60H) is conducting air-supports for Operation Enduring Freedom.

  • F/A-18Es (VFA 22) were providing armed overwatch when a friendly ground unit came under automatic weapons fire near Lashkar Gah (Google Maps). The attack ended when the aircraft flew a show of force over the area.

USAF: Airpower Summary for July 11
Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 79 close-air-support missions
  • Several F/A-18Es (VFA 115) used a show of force at Sangin (Google Maps) to successfully deter and stop Anti Afghan forces from attacking Coalition forces with RPGs and small arms fire.
  • More F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 25 or 113) at Gereshk (Google Maps) destroyed an enemy weapons cache and vehicle eliminating future potential danger to friendly forces and civilians. GBU-12's were used.
  • Lashkar Gah (Google Maps) saw action as F/A-18C[N]'s (VFA 25 or 113) dropped flares in a show of force that stopped friendly forces from taking enemy fire. The aircraft remained in place providing armed overwatch while friendly forces were in the area.

  • Gulf of Aden (Jul. 6-12, 2009) - During Jul. 6-12, the JMSDF antipiracy maritime force achieved following escort missions in the Gulf of Aden.

    36th escort mission toward east for 3 vessels Jul. 5-7.
    37th escort mission toward west for 4 vessels Jul. 11-12.

    So far, the maritime force which consists of JS Samidare (DD 106), JS Sazanami (DD 113), four helis, SBU and JCG officers has achieved 37 escort missions for 112 Japan linked commercial vessels in all. Samidare and Sazanami are two of four destroyers assigned to Escort Division 8.
Achievements of JMSDF air patrol missions in the Gulf of Aden
Japan MoD: 派遣海賊対処航空隊所属P-3Cの飛行実績について
  • Gulf of Aden (Jul. 6-12, 2009) - During Jul. 6-12, the JMSDF antipiracy air Squadron based in Djibouti flew 4 patrol missions for supports the antipiracy maritime force and coaliton navies in the Gulf of Aden.

    The antipiracy SQ. equipped with two P-3C aircraft and has completed 16 patrol missions in all since Jun. 11.
