U.S. Navy: Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group Deploys

Air-operations - U.S. Navy air-operations as part of Coalition Airpower

CVW 7 that consists of VFA 143 (F/A-18E), VFA 103 (F/A-18F), VFA 83, VFA 131 (F/A-18C[N]), VAQ 140 (EA-6B), VAW 121 (E-2C NP) and HS 5 (SH-60F, HH-60H) is conducting air-supports for Operation Enduring Freedom.

Achievements of JMSDF escort missions in the Gulf of Aden
Japan MoD: 派遣活動の実績
  • Gulf of Aden (Jun. 13-19, 2009) - During Jun. 13-19, the JMSDF antipiracy maritime force achieved following escort missions in the Gulf of Aden.

    27th escort mission for 2 vessels Jun. 13-15.
    28th escort mission for 2 vessels Jun. 16-18.

    So far, the maritime force which consists of JS Samidare (DD 106), JS Sazanami (DD 113), four helis, SBU and JCG officers has achieved 28 escort missions for 87 Japan linked commercial vessels in all. Samidare and Sazanami are two of four destroyers assigned to Escort Division 8.

    In addtion, two JMSDF P-3C aircraft assigned to the antipiracy SQ has conducted an ISR operation in the Gulf of Aden, off Somalia since Jun. 11.

  • Arabian Sea (Jun. 19, 2009) - USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) as flagship of Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility supporting operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom as well as maritime security operations.

  • Philippine Sea (Jun. 19, 2009) - USS George Washington (CVN 73) is underway in Philippine Sea on her first summer deployment from Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan supporting security and stability in the western Pacific Ocean.

  • Philippine Sea (Jun. 19, 2009) - USS Tortuga (LSD 46) as part of Essex ARG/31st MEU is underway for Summer Deployment, and scheduled to participate in military exercise Talisman Saber with the Royal Australian Forces.

    * USS Essex (LHD 2) is also underway in Philippine Sea.
USS Gettsburg to visit the Republic of Seychelles
USN: CTF 151, USS Gettysburg Strengthen International Ties in Seychelles
  • Republic of Seychelles (Jun. 19, 2009) - USS Gettysburg (CG 64) as flagship of CTF 151 completed a four-day port visit Jun. 19 to the Republic of Seychelles.

    CTF 151 is a Turkish-led, multinational task force established to conduct counterpiracy operations.

    * Gettysburg is deployed as part of Eisenhower CSG.
The high-speed experimental boat Stiletto visits Guantanamo Bay
U.S. Navy: Stiletto Visits Guantanamo Bay
  • Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (Jun. 19, 2009) - The Department of Defense's high-speed experimental boat Stiletto made a brief port visit to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to replenish fuel and supplies Jun. 19 on U.S. and multinational counter-illicit trafficking operations and operational tests.

    Stiletto is on her second deployment in the U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command area of focus. She has undergone testing by the Department of Defense for her usefulness in littoral operations and interoperable environments.

U.S. Navy: U.S. Kicks Off Participation in FRUKUS 2009
  • Bay of Biscay, France (Jun. 19, 2009) - Maritime forces from four navies France, Russia, UK, U.S. begins an annual exercise "FRUKUS" in the Bay of Biscay, France Jun. 19.

    Participating from U.S. forces are USS Klakring (FFG 42) and staff for the Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet.

    * klakring is on a scheduled deployment in U.S. 6th Fleet AOR.

Memo

Currently, JMSDF can't escort and protect foreign vessels except emergencies outside Japan territory due to limitation of existing law, however Jun. 19, the Diet enacted the antipiracy law authorizing JMSDF to escort and protect any nations vessels outside Japan territory.

JS Harusame (DD 102), JS Amagiri (DD 154) will depart to the Gulf of Aden as a relief unit of the antipiracy operation soon.

Japan Gov't decided make Japan Coast Guard, not JMSDF performs inspections of North Korea ships in line with a U.N. Security Council resolution.

Jun. 19, USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49), USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) and USS Chafee (DDG 90) arrived in Singapore during CARAT 2009 Singapore phase.
