  • Tokyo, Japan (Jul. 30, 2009) - According to Kyodo News via Chunichi web, Japan Gov`t plans to facilities near Djibouti airport, Republic of Djibouti for Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) 1st antipiracy air squadron in next year.

    Two MSDF P-3Cs and almost 150 GSDF and MSDF personnel assigned to the sq. have conducted an antipiracy surveillance in the Gulf of Aden since Jun. using civilian facilities and U.S. Naval Base Camp Le Monier.

Coalition Airpower conducted 83 close-air-support missions
  • A friendly forces convoy requested air support from F/A-18C[N]s that were providing armed overwatch at Tarin Kowt (Google Maps). The convoy reported RPG attacks and small-arms fire. The F/A-18C[N]s provided several shows of force and expended numerous flares. USAF A-10s were also in the vicinity providing support to friendly forces. The A-10s destroyed several anti-Afghan force positions with precision guided munitions and cannon fire. Coalition airpower stopped the enemy attacks.

Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) as the primary opposition leader Hatoyama said that if DPJ win the power in the general-election in Aug., MSDF's refueling supports for OEF in Indian Ocean would end in Jan. when a "replenishment support special measures law" expires.

Leaving his opinion, I guess not replenishment supports has been effective under the inflexible law authorizing supports for only CTF 150.

  • West of Kandahar, a dismounted combat patrol of Coalition forces took small arms fire from anti-Coalition forces in a tree line position. The Coalition forces also experienced several IED detonations and requested support from F/A-18Es in the area. The F/A-18Es released a GBU-38 on the enemy position and the attack stopped immediately.

  • Gulf of Aden (Jul. 28, 2009) - Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) 2nd antipiracy maritime force has relieved 1st AMF and started a 1st escort mission (42nd escorts in total as MSDF) Jul. 28 under an antipiracy new law for 5 vessels including 2 non Japan linked vessels in the Gulf of Aden.

    The antipiracy law has taken effect Jul. 24, authorizes to MSDF escorts and protects any nations vessels outside Japan territory under an eased ROE different from an existing law.

    The 2nd AMF that consists of JS Harusame (DD 102), JS Amagiri (DD 152), JCG officers and other units arrived City of Djibouti, Republic of Djibouti Jul. 24.

  • Gulf of Aden (Jul. 20-26, 2009) - During Jul. 20-26, the JMSDF antipiracy maritime force has completed following escort missions in the Gulf of Aden.

    40th escort mission toward east for a vessel Jul. 18-20.
    41st escort mission toward west for 3 vessels Jul. 20-22.

    The 1st maritime force which consists of JS Samidare (DD 106), JS Sazanami (DD 113), four helis, SBU and JCG officers has completed its all missions. It achieved 41 escorts for 121 Japan linked commercial vessels in all. In addition, helped 6 foreign vessels from suspected pirates threats.

    Now, the 2nd maritime force that consists of JS Harusame (DD 102), JS Amagiri (DD 152) and other units is moving in the scene for taking over escort missions.

    The antipiracy SQ. equipped with two P-3C aircraft and has completed 25 patrol missions in all since Jun. 11.

  • F/A-18C[N]'s (VFA 25 or 113) at Shurakian (Google Maps) expended flares providing shows of force cover for Coalition forces about to take enemy small arms fire. The shows of force eliminated the threat to Coalition forces.
  • Several F/A-18Es (VFA 115) and USAF B-1Bs were in the vicinity of Morghab (Google Maps) to provide friendly forces with air cover. The F/A-18E's provided support through shows of force to friendly forces under imminent threat from enemy forces. Navy aircraft strafed an enemy position after coalition forces were hit with small-arms fire. Coalition aircraft also dropped GBU-38's on the enemy position, destroying an enemy arms cache. Enemy activity ceased upon completion of the strafing and bomb runs.

  • At Sangin (Google Maps), F/A-18Fs (VFA 22) rolled in to provide cover for coalition forces taking small arms fire. The show of force eliminated the threat to coalition forces.
  • F/A-18Es (VFA 115) at Lashkar Gah (Google Maps) rolled in to provide cover for a friendly forces convoy taking RPG and small arms fire. During this skirmish, there were shows of force and numerous flares expended causing the enemy to stop the attack on the convoy.
  • F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 25 or 113) demonstrated shows of force during the day near Tarin Kowt (Google Maps) on anti-coalition forces that had been firing rockets on Coalition and friendly forces. Enemy forces ceased fire after several flares were expended. Armed overwatch was provided for several more hours.

After an antipiracy law takes effect Jul 24, the JMSDF relief antipiracy maritime force that consists of JS Harusame (DD 102), JS Amagiri (DD 152) and other units is expected to begin an escort operation in the Gulf of Aden. The maritime force deployed Jul. 6.

According to local news, USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) is scheduled to visit to Yokohama, Japan Jul. 21 for a goodwill mission.

Japan MoD reported 76 JSDF personnel and 7 civilian employees have committed suicide in last year. A psychological cause ranks first, accounts for over 30%. Any forces are worried about how to cope with suicides.

  • More F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 25 or 113) at Gereshk (Google Maps) destroyed an enemy weapons cache and vehicle eliminating future potential danger to friendly forces and civilians. GBU-12's were used.

    36th escort mission toward east for 3 vessels Jul. 5-7.
    37th escort mission toward west for 4 vessels Jul. 11-12.

    So far, the maritime force which consists of JS Samidare (DD 106), JS Sazanami (DD 113), four helis, SBU and JCG officers has achieved 37 escort missions for 112 Japan linked commercial vessels in all. Samidare and Sazanami are two of four destroyers assigned to Escort Division 8.

Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 77 close-air-support missions
  • In the vicinity of Gereshk (Google Maps), several F/A-18Fs (VFA 22), in support of Coalition forces, utilized GBU-38's to eliminate enemy forces hidden in a tree line. The Coalition forces had been under small arms fire until that time.
  • The area around Lashkar Gah (Google Maps) saw action as several F/A-18F's (VFA 22) were called on to destroy an enemy compound that anti Afghan forces were utilizing to fire on coalition forces. The use of strafing runs and several GBU-38's terminated the enemy attack and the position was destroyed.
  • Anti Afghan forces around Tarin Kowt (Google Maps) had taken positions in a tree line and on a ridge and were attacking coalition forces with small arms fire when several Navy F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 25 or 113) and F/A-18Fs (VFA 22) dropped a combination of GBU-12 and 38's and eliminated the threat.
  • Lashkar Gah saw more action as several F/A-18Fs (VFA 22) and a USAF B-1B made simultaneous shows of forces allowing coalition forces pinned down by enemy fire to regroup when the firing stopped. Flares were dropped during the show of force.

  • 23 USAF ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. In addition, one Coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 83 close-air-support missions
  • Near Now Zad (Google Maps), a USAF MQ-9A and several U.S. Navy F/A-18As (-C[N]?) (VFA 23 or 113) engaged Anti-Coalition forces. The MQ-9A utilized a GBU-12 to eliminate enemy forces armed with a RPG. A second GBU-12 was dropped to destroy unexploded ordnance keeping friendly forces and local civilians safe. The F/A-18s used strafing runs with 20mm weapons to destroy numerous Anti-Coalition forces hidden in a tree line position that had been firing on friendly forces.
  • In the Tarin Kowt area (Google Maps), an F/A-18F (VFA 22) provided overwatch for a vehicle struck by an improvised explosive device. The show of force provided an alert to enemy forces that appropriate protection was being provided to the downed vehicle.

  • Tokyo, Japan (Jul. 7, 2009) - Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) annouced they are scheduled to conduct a Mine Warfare Exercise and a Mine Countermeasures Exercise in Mutsu Bay, Japan with U.S. Navy EODMU Five during Jul. 17-29.

    MSDF's twenty five mine warfare ships including JS Uraga (MST 463), JS Bungo (MST 464) and several aircraft will be participating in the exercise.

  • Tokyo, Japan (Jul. 7, 2009) - Jul. 7, Aso Cabinet drafted a cargo inspection bill in line with a U.N. resolution against a North Korean nuclear test. The bill prescribes that Japan Coast Guard and Japan Customs shall conduct inspections on nuclear or missile and other materials of cargo ships and aircraft, JMSDF shall support JCG.

    The diet deliberations on the bill are expected to start Jul. 9.

    PO2 died Jul. 6 due to an IED attack on his convoy in northern Afghanistan.

    32nd escort mission toward east for 3 vessels Jun. 27-29.

    So far, the maritime force which consists of JS Samidare (DD 106), JS Sazanami (DD 113), four helis, SBU and JCG officers has achieved 35 escort missions for 105 Japan linked commercial vessels in all. Samidare and Sazanami are two of four destroyers assigned to Escort Division 8.

    The antipiracy SQ. equipped with two P-3C aircraft and has completed 12 patrol missions in all since Jun. 11.

  • IVO Tsushima islands, Japan (Jul. 2, 2009) - Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Abukuma class destroyer JS Sendai (DE 232), assigned to 16th Escort Div., detected 3 Russian Ships sailing toward south in the vicinity of Tsushima islands, Japan Jul. 2.

    The Russian maritime group was comprised of Udaloy class destroyer RFS Admiral Tributs (DDG 564), Boris Chilikin class oiler Boris Butoma and a Sorum class fleet tag.

    The maritime group is heading to off the coast of Somalia for an antipiracy operation.

JASDF get the JADGE
JASDF: 自動警戒管制システム(JADGE)の運用開始について
  • Tokyo, Japan (Jul. 1, 2009) - Japan Air Self Defense Force (JASDF) announced they have started operating Japan Aerospace Defense Ground Environment (JADGE) Jul. 1. after conpleting various tests.

    JADGE is the newest, most important and biggest Command Control Communication Computer Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance system (C4ISR) for joint operations of Self Defense Force in air defense.

    In addition, JADGE has capabilities to control joint BMD operations different from previous system, Base Air Defense Ground Environment (BADGE). Therefore, Maritime Self Defense Force BMD capable Aegis destroyers would deploy under the operational control of JADGE in the operations.
