  • Gulf of Aden (May 23-29, 2009) - During May 23-29, The JMSDF antipiracy maritime force achieved following escort missions in the Gulf of Aden.

    20th escort mission for 2 vessels May 24-26.
    21st escort mission for 4 vessels May 26-28.

    Thus far, the maritime force which consists of JS Samidare (DD 106), JS Sazanami (DD 113), four helis, SBU and JCG officers has achieved 21 escort missions for 68 Japan linked commercial vessels in all. Both destroyers are assigned to Escort Division 8.

Coalition Airpower conducted 74 close-air-support missions
  • USAF A-10s and F-15Es and a Navy F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131) employed a variety of munitions during an engagement near Oruzgan (Google Maps). The strikes, using various GBU munitions, general purpose 500-pound bombs and cannon strafes, targeted anti-Afghan forces who were detected preparing for an attack on an Afghan and Coalition unit. A convoy vehicle had been hit by an IED, prompting the ground forces commander to call in air support.
  • In the vicinity of Lashkar Gah (Google Maps), an F/A-18E (VFA 143) was called in by a Coalition and Afghan unit after they began taking enemy RPG, rifle and mortar fire. The jet made a strafing run against enemy personnel in an open field, putting a stop to hostile fire. An F/A-18F (VFA 103) had conducted shows of force to suppress enemy forces action prior to the strike.
  • Near Chahar Bagh (Google Maps) an F/A-18F (VFA 103) responded after an Afghan National Army unit began receiving small arms fire. The Super Hornet's maneuver reduced enemy fire and gave the Afghan soldiers freedom to maneuver.
  • In Sangin (Google Maps), an F/A-18C (VFA 83 or 131) intervened with a show of force after an anti-Afghan forces ambush in which an Afghan government convoy took multiple hits from IEDs and was subjected to heavy fire from concealed gunmen in surrounding buildings. The maneuver stopped the attack, allowing the convoy to pull back to safety.

  • JMSDF Atsugi A.B., Japan (May 28, 2009) - Two Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) P-3C aircraft which are assigned to VP 3 leave from JMSDF Atsugi air base to Djibouti for an antipiracy operation in the Gulf of Aden, off Somalia.

    The Djibouti-based air squadron will conduct surveillance, information gathering and patrol missions for an increase of the JMSDF maritime force and coalition antipiracy activities in the Gulf of Aden, off Somalia.

  • San Diego, CA (May 28, 2009) - USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) departed San Diego, CA May 28 on a deployment to the 7th and 5th Fleet Areas of Responsibility.

    The carrier joins the other ships of its strike group which departed the day prior, including USS Chancellorsville (CG 62), USS Decatur (DDG 73), USS Howard (DDG 83), USS Gridley (DDG 101) and USS Thach (FFG 43).

  • An F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131) conducted a show of force and expended flares to stave off an enemy attack against Afghan National Army troops under heavy fire near Bagram (Google Maps). A medevac flight along with the Afghan troops was pinned by enemy fire which ceased when the strike aircraft arrived on scene. The aircraft remained overhead to provide overwatch until friendly forces regrouped.

    Nimitz CSG Carrier Strike Group (CSG) is comprised Nimitz, CVW 11, USS Chosin (CG 65), USS Sampson (DDG 102), USS Pinckney (DDG 91), USS Higgins (DDG 76) and USS Rentz (FFG 46).

Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 82 close-air-support missions
  • In Qalat (Google Maps), USAF B-1Bs and U.S. Navy F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 83 or 131) and F/A-18Fs (VFA 103) intervened when an Afghan and coalition convoy vehicle was struck by an IED and anti-Afghan forces began shooting. Using GBU-38s and -12s, the aircraft hit enemy fighting positions surrounding the convoy's position and destroyed damaged coalition equipment to keep it from falling into enemy hands. A USAF F-15E and an A-10 also conducted shows of force over positions where enemy forces were located in order to suppress their fire.
  • A USAF F-15E, U.S. Navy F/A-18E (VFA 143) and RAF GR-9 conducted shows of force in Bagram (Google Maps) and Sangin (Google Maps) in order to deter enemy attacks after ground forces spotted enemy personnel preparing to launch attacks in both areas. The presence of aircraft prevented any ground engagement from taking place, preserving the peace and allowing Afghan and coalition security and reconstruction operations to go ahead without enemy interference.

    Chung-Hoon has deployed in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility since leaving Pearl Harbor Jan. '09.

    * At first, the destroyer was part of Boxer ESG. However, Boxer ESG was renamed Boxer ARG/13th MEU and separated combatant ships.

Air-operations - U.S. Navy air-operations as part of Coalition Airpower

USAF: May 25 airpower summary: C-17s provide intra-theater airlift
Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 80 close-air-support missions
  • An RAF GR-9 along with F/A-18Fs (VFA 103) conducted strikes in the Tarin Kowt area (Google Maps) after a friendly unit discovered an IED and saw enemy forces setting up for an ambush. The jets used rockets and GBU-38s to hit enemy positions set up along a roadside treeline and along a riverbank. An aircraft also tracked the movement of an enemy spotter on a motorbike, allowing a follow-on strike on hostile emplacements firing on the friendly unit with mortars and sporadic gunshots.
  • F/A-18Es (VFA 143) dropped a GBU-38 and strafed enemy positions near Qalat (Google Maps) after anti-Afghan forces initiated an ambush. The F/A-18Es used their bombs and guns to pick off hostile hillside fighting positions, freeing a convoy from the enemy's roadside attack.
  • A Super Hornet (VFA 103 or 143) flew a show of force over Sangin (Google Maps) supporting Afghan forces conducting a search operation in the town. Enemy forces were holed up in a compound and firing at the friendly unit. The maneuver suppressed enemy fire so Afghan troops could go in and capture the location.
  • In Lashkar Gah (Google Maps), F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 83 or 131) flew shows of force to deter enemy attack and to support convoys travelling through the area. The aircraft helped the convoys avoid firefights which could have prevented them from completing missions in support of Afghan reconstruction or endangered local residents.

  • An extended battle took place near Oruzgan (Google Maps) which began after an anti-Afghan forces IED-initiated ambush hit a friendly convoy. Increasing amounts of aircraft arrived to provide cover and attack enemy targets, including USAF B-1Bs, F-15Es, MQ-1Bs and Navy F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 83 or 131) and F/A-18Fs (VFA 103). The aircraft struck enemy fighting positions and personnel along ridgelines and in nearby orchards using a variety of GBU types.

Coalition Airpower conducted 74 close-air-support missions
  • F/A-18Fs (VFA 103) conducted strafing runs against anti-Afghan forces in a treeline near Lashkar Gah (Google Maps). Friendly forces had begun receiving enemy fire shortly after departing a forward base.
  • A Super Hornet (VFA 103 or 143) conducted shows of force and launched flares in the area near Ghazni (Google Maps) following an IED explosion and ambush against Afghan National Army troops. The maneuver stopped the attack allowing the ANA to withdraw and regroup from the scene of the ambush.
  • USAF F-15Es and an F/A-18E (VFA 143) conducted shows of force near Qal-E-Naw (unknown), Qalat (Google Maps) and Bagram (Google Maps) to deter enemy forces. The aircraft prevented confrontation from taking place during security and reconstruction operations without needing to use lethal force.

    In response to the nuclear test, Japan Air Self Defense Force (JASDF) T-4 Dolphin jet trainers began flying tonight from JASDF Hyakuri, Misawa and Tuiki air bases as part of checking radioactivity materials over Japan using dust sampling pods.

    Other Government organs are also participating in the checking.

  • Near Fallujah, Iraq (May 25, 2009) - Reserve Cmdr. as an individual augmentee (IA) died May 25 from injuries suffered as a result of an improvised explosive device (IED) attack on his convoy southeast of Fallujah. Cmdr. was assigned to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Gulf Region Division in Iraq.

    According to Navy Times, two others were killed and two were wounded in the IED attack.

    CARAT is a series of bilateral exercises held annually in Southeast Asia to strengthen relationships and enhance the operational readiness of the participating forces.

USS Anzio (CG 68) also conducts a RAS.

    Bataan ARG/22nd MEU is on a scheduled deployment in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility for supports maritime security operations.

Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 83 close-air-support missions
  • The battle in Lashkar Gah (Google Maps) concluded after multiple additional aircraft engaged anti-Afghan forces targets. Joining the engagement on May 22 were USAF A-10s, F-15Es, B-1Bs, MQ-1Bs, and MQ-9As as well as Navy F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 83 or 131) and F/A-18Es (VFA 143). Using a variety of GBU types, strafes, rockets, and Hellfire missiles, the aircraft struck numerous enemy targets including buildings and compounds which were the site of drug production operations, as well as groups of enemy personnel and their fighting positions during the fight with Afghan and Coalition troops. The battle resulted in a reduction in anti-Afghan forces drug processing capability and significant losses to enemy forces in southern Afghanistan.
  • F/A-18Fs (VFA 143) flying over Qalat (Google Maps) performed shows of force after Afghan and Coalition forces began receiving fire. The aircraft remained overhead to cover the unit afterward.
  • In Qal-E-Naw (unknown), F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 83 or 131), Super Hornets (VFA 103 or 143) and a USAF A-10 conducted shows of force as an Afghan patrol accompanied by Coalition advisors entered a village. The overflights deterred enemy forces from attacking as the soldiers met with local residents and moved through the town.

  • U.S. 5th Fleet AOR (May 22, 2009) - USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7 resumed flight operations May 22 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) after completing a historic port visit to Hidd, Bahrain.

    Since deploying, CVW 7 has flown 3,370 sorties accumulating nearly 10,500 flight hours. Since arriving (Mar. 21) in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations, CVW-7 has flown 6,750 hours in support of coalition forces operating on the ground in Afghanistan.

    Eisenhower CSG is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations as part of a regularly scheduled deployment in support of OEF, OIF as well as MSO.

  • The battle in Lashkar Gah (Google Maps), which started May 18, continued. Many additional sorties of Coalition aircraft entered the fight, including USAF A-10s, F-15Es, B-1Bs, MQ-1Bs, MQ-9As and F/A-18Fs (VFA 103).

    Aircraft struck anti-Afghan forces positions using several GBU types, general purpose 500-pound guided bombs, strafes, and Hellfire missiles. Targets included enemy fighting positions among treelines, ridges, and buildings; sniper hides and fighting holes; and mortar and rocket emplacements. Several aircraft flew shows of force to deter enemy forces or to suppress their fire to enable friendly maneuver.
  • Near Morghab (Google Maps), F/A-18Es (VFA 143) conducted shows of force to disperse enemy forces attacking a Convoy. The aircraft also provided armed overwatch to ensure the convoy safely reached its destination.
  • A Coalition aircraft performed a show of force over a suspicious position in order to deter a potential enemy attack on an Afghan and Coalition patrol. The aircraft also checked out a series of ground locations in the path of the patrol, providing reconnaissance for the ground force commander. Nearby, An F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131) performed a show of force and expended flares as a deterrent to enemy action.

USS Hartford returned to Groton for repairs

  • Groton, CT (May 21, 2009) - USS Hartford (SSN 768) returned to Naval Submarine Base New London at Groton, CT May 21 after a month-long surface transit from Bahrain.

    After that long ride, Hartford is expected to enter Electric Boat shipyard for a thorough inspection to assess required repairs following the March 20 collision with the amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18) in the Strait of Hormuz.

    USS New Orleans returned to sea May 13 after completing fully repairs in Manama, Bahrain.

    * Electric Boat Corp. received a $15.8 million contract for repairs of Hartford. Repairs will be completed by Oct. '09.

  • La Ceiba, Honduras (May 21, 2009) - USS Doyle (FFG 39) will be participating in various subject matter expert exchanges with the Honduran military over the next few days. Doyle is part of the U.S. 4th Fleet Southern Seas 2009 deployment. Southern Seas aims to enhance interoperabilty between forces and strengthen relations with nations in the U.S. 4th Fleet and U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility.

    * USS Kauffman (FFG-59) is also deployed to Southern Seas.

  • Yokosuka, Japan (May 20, 2009) - USS George Washington (CVN 73), with nearly 5,000 Sailors, departed its forward-deployed port of Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka May 20 to conduct its combat operations efficiency (COE) evaluation in the Western Pacific.

    Following the COE evaluation, George Washington expects to conduct its first summer deployment supporting security and stability in the Western Pacific region.

  • Near Djibouti (May 19, 2009) - Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) will be conducting an ARG/Marine Expeditionary Unit Exercise (MEUEX) May 19-26, in the Gulf of Aden and ashore at Camp Lemonier in Djibouti.

    The ARG/MEUEX is an amphibious ship-to-shore training evolution designed to enhance Navy and Marine Corps amphibious capabilities in unfamiliar terrain and involves the USS New Orleans (LPD 18), USS Comstock (LSD 45) and 13th MEU.

    Boxer ARG is comprised of PHIBRON 5, USS Boxer (LHD 4), New Orleans, Comstock, USS Lake Champlain (CG 57), HSC 21 De 3, NBG 1, ACU 5 and 1, BMU 1 and FST 5.

    13th MEU is comprised of a Command Element, HMM 163 (REIN), CLB 13 and BLT 1/1.

    Boxer ARG/13th MEU is currently on a scheduled deployment in the U.S. 5th Fleet AOR for Maritime Security Operations (MSO).

    * The original ARG don't include combatant ships such as cruisers or destroyers. Perhaps Lake Champlain has served as escort.

  • Off the coast of Southern California (May 19, 2009) - At 11:36 p.m., PST, May 19, an HH-60 helicopter which is assigned to HS 6, CVW 11 went down off the coast of Southern California while conducting a composite unit training exercise (COMPUTEX) as part of Nimitz Carrier Strike Group.

    The mishap is under investigation.

    * SAR efforts had recovered three bodies of five aircrew on May 20.
    * May 21, U.S. Navy concluded that there is little possibility of other aircrew survival.

    The Djibouti-based air squadron will conduct surveillance, information gathering and patrol missions for an increase of the JMSDF maritime force and coalition antipiracy activities in the Gulf of Aden, off Somalia.

    It will be the JSDF first overseas joint operation and the JMSDF first overseas maritime patrol operation.

  • Gulf of Aden (May 18, 2009) - The JMSDF antipiracy maritime force had received information of the related organs that a Maltese-Flagged tanker was being attacked by a suspicious boat on May 18 during a escort mission in the Gulf of Aden.

    In response to information, the maritime force sent a SH-60K helicopter from JS Samire (DD 106) for a reconnaissance and then revealed the tanker was out of harm's way but couldn't find a suspicious boat.

    The help to foreign vessel is the 5th time as JMSDF during the antipiracy operation in the Gulf of Aden.

  • May 18, 17:45 (JST): The antipiracy maritime force received information of the related organs during 18th escort mission for six Japan linked vessels in the Gulf of Aden.
  • 18:01: JS Sazanami (DD 106) sent a SH-60K helicopter toward southwest, 50nm of Sazanami.
  • 18:07: The SH-60K arrived on the scene and then confirmed the safty of Maltese tanker but couldn't find a suspicious boat.
  • 18:39: The SH-60K returned to duty.

  • Tokyo, Japan (May 15, 2009) - Today, Minister of Defense Hamada issues the deployment order of an antipiracy air squadron which is comprised of JMSDF two P-3C aircraft (VP 4), a JGSDF security unit (CRF) and other units for an antipiracy operation in the Gulf of Aden, off Somalia. The antipiracy air squadron is expected to depart for Djibouti by late May. JASDF will also participate in the operation as part of transport supports.

    Mar. 30, The JMSDF antipiracy maritime force which consists of two destroyers and other units began the operation in the Gulf of Aden.

    The air squadron will conduct surveillance, information gathering and patrol missions for an increase of the maritime force and coalition antipiracy activities in the Gulf of Aden, off Somalia.

    It will be the JSDF first overseas joint operation and the JMSDF first overseas maritime patrol operation.

  • Norfolk (May 13, 2009) - Bataan Amphibious Ready Group and 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (Bataan ARG/22nd MEU) began to deploy from Norfolk May 13 as part of a regularly scheduled deployment.

    Bataa ARG/22nd MEU will support maritime security operations, provide crisis response capability and increase theater security cooperation and forward naval presence in the 5th and 6th Fleet Areas of Operation.

    Bataan ARG/22nd MEU is comprised of USS Bataan (LHD 5), USS Ponce (LPD 15), USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) and 22nd MEU.

    In addition, USS Anzio (CG 68) also depart Norfolk for a separatly deployment to the U.S. 5th, 6th Fleet AOR.

    * VMM 263 (REIN) as part of 22nd MEU is being equipped with MV 22 Opreys.

  • Near Qalat (Google Maps), an F/A-18F (VFA 103) dropped a GBU-12 and conducted a strafing run targeting enemy forces clustered on a ridgeline. Enemy forces had attacked friendly soldiers with an IED earlier.

JS Shirase to be commissioned
JMSDF: 砕氷艦「しらせ」の引渡式・自衛艦旗授与式について
  • Tokyo, Japan (May 12, 2009) - Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) announced JS Shirase (AGB 5003) is scheduled to be commissioned at Maizuru shipyard, Universal Shipbuilding Corporation May 20. Shirase is named after Shirase Glacier in Antarctica, is the second ship of JMSDF to have the name Shirase and is an Icebreaker as well as previous Shirase.

    The second Shirase will also contribute very much to the Antarctic exploration.

    Kitty had deployed in Yokosuka, Japan the previous 10 years and contributed to the Japan-U.S. alliance.

Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 75 close-air-support missions
  • F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 83 or 131) used GBU-38 strikes to destroy an enemy bunker and a "spider hole" covered dugout fighting position near Musa Qala/Musa Qaleh (Google Maps). Enemy forces had attempted to ambush a Coalition unit with an IED and were firing on friendly forces with RPG launchers and machine guns. The aircraft destroyed the enemy positions.
  • A USAF, U.S. Navy, and RAF aircraft each conducted a show of force in other parts of Afghanistan to deter enemy action. The shows of force succeeded in preventing confrontations, allowing Afghan reconstruction and security efforts to proceed in the Karokh (Google Maps), Bagram (Google Maps), and Kandahar (Google Maps) areas without violence.

  • Near Gardez (Google Maps), an F/A-18E (VFA 143) executed a show of force and expended flares over an enemy position prior to an Afghan National Army and Coalition dismounted patrol. The show of force thwarted a planned enemy ambush when anti-Afghan forces personnel realized their location was known and fled the area. Later, an A-10 flew a show of force and expended flares to deter further enemy action as the patrol prepared to depart the area.

Japan MoD: 補給支援活動の実績について (平成21年4月分)
  • Tokyo, Japan (May. 11, 2009) - Japan Ministry of Defense reported that achievements of Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) replenishment operation for Combined Task Force (CTF) 150 in Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean until Apr. 2009. The operation is based on the Replenishment Support Special Measures Law.

    JMSDF has achieved refueling of 18,580 kiloliter (845 Kl for Apr.) for 100 coalition ships (5 ships for Apr.) on the operation since Feb. 2008.

    Currently, The 5th dispatch force has conducted the operation since Mar. 16, 2009. The dispatch force is comprised of Towada class oiler JS Tokiwa (AOE 423) and Murasame class destroyer JS Akebono (DD 108).

    Apr. 27, Tokiwa conducted a 100th replenishment at sea (RAS) with French Navy FS Aconit (F 713).

    Cmdr. had sustained injuries in a non-combat related incident at Camp Victory, Iraq.

  • Newport News, VA (May 11, 2009) - U.S. Navy took delivery of USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) from Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding May 11 at Newport News, VA. George H.W. Bush is the 10th and final Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.

    Bush was due to be delivered after acceptance trials April 10 but the schedule had been delayed by troubles of the emergency diesel generator.

  • Tokyo, Japan (May 10, 2009) - According to Kyodo News, Japan Government decided to issue the order of dispatching JMSDF two P-3C aircraft May 15 for an antipiracy operation off Somalia. The aircraft and SDF personnel are expected to depart for Djibouti by late May.

    It will be the first overseas air operation as JMSDF.

    * The antipiracy maritime force began the 1st escort mission for Japan linked vessels in the Gulf of Aden Mar. 30.

    Florida is the first ever Atlantic Fleet Ohio-class SSGN to be forwarded deployed. Florida began its maiden deployment on April 26, 2008 and the arrival of Florida marked the first time the submarine returned to its homeport in 13-months.

  • Near Musa Qala/Musa Qaleh (Google Maps), an F/A-18E (VFA 143) and a Coalition aircraft performed several shows of force over enemy positions as a demonstration of friendly airpower during an engagement there. The aircraft remained overhead to provide additional cover and protection for ground forces.
  • An F/A-18E (VFA 143) carried out a show of force near Morghab (Google Maps) when Coalition troops came under fire from anti-Afghan gunmen with RPG launchers and automatic weapons. The jet's appearance suppressed enemy fire and provided an additional element of force presence supporting ground operations.
  • Near Lashkar Gah (Google Maps), F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 83 or 131) flew shows of force and expended a number of flares over enemy forces concealed in a tree line and compounds. The jets were supporting a friendly unit which had come under enemy heavy fire. The jets also provided tactical reconnaissance to the ground forces commander.

Coalition Airpower conducted 80 close-air-support missions
  • Near Parmakan (Google Maps), F/A-18Fs (VFA 103) conducted shows of force after anti-Afghan personnel ambushed an Afghan and Coalition convoy. Enemy personnel had detonated an improvised explosive device and begun firing automatic weapons at the convoy. The maneuvers allowed friendly forces to safely withdraw and regroup.
  • In the Qalat region (Google Maps), a Super Hornet (VFA 103 or 143) hit an enemy force on a ridgeline using a GBU-38 after anti-Afghan personnel started shooting at friendly security forces. The jet also conducted two shows of force prior to releasing weapons in an unheeded effort to deter enemy gunmen using less than lethal force.
  • An F/A-18F (VFA 103) and a USAF B-1B flew shows of force near Tarin Kowt (Google Maps) after enemy forces detonated an IED against an Afghan and Coalition convoy. The arrival of aircraft deterred additional confrontation and allowed the convoy to proceed without further hindrance.
  • F/A-18Fs (VFA 103) over Gereshk (Google Maps) flew shows of force to dissuade enemy forces from attacking Coalition and Afghan convoys. The convoys successfully completed their reconstruction and humanitarian missions without enemy interference.

Coalition Airpower conducted 65 close-air-support missions
  • Near Gardez (Google Maps), an F/A-18E (VFA 143) and a USAF F-15E conducted shows of force after an Afghan National Army and coalition patrol came under enemy fire. One enemy-firing position ceased fire and the anti-Afghan forces there withdrew. However, the F-15E performed a warning strafe into an empty field at the request of the ground forces commander after additional enemy forces did not stop firing following the shows of force. The strafing pass was successful in ending the fight.
  • F/A-18Cs (VFA 83 or 131) and F/A-18Fs (VFA 103) performed shows of force in several areas of Afghanistan in support of coalition and Afghan convoy operations. The maneuvers deterred enemy activity while friendly forces carried out humanitarian and reconstruction operations.

  • Near Lashkar Gah (Google Maps), an RAF GR-9 and an F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131) flew shows of force and expended flares after personnel were spotted conducting suspicious activities, and later when anti-Afghan forces were shooting at a friendly convoy. The shows of force succeeded in both cases in stopping hostile actions.
  • An F/A-18F (VFA 103) flew a show of force and expended flares over Delaram (Google Maps) after a friendly supply convoy had a vehicle break an axle. The show of force caused personnel near the vehicle to disperse, preventing confrontation on the ground as the vehicle was restored to operating order.

  • Gulf of Aden (Apr. 25-May. 1, 2009) - During Apr. 25-May 1, JMSDF antipiracy maritime force achieved following escort missions in the Gulf of Aden.

    a 11th escort mission for 2 vessels Apr. 24-26.
    I believe the maritime force visited Djibouti after completing the escorts.

    a 12th escort mission for 5 vessels Apr. 29-30.
    Apr. 30, the maritime force conducted a 4th protection for a no-Japan linked vessel.

    Thus far, the maritime force which consists of JS Samidare (DD 106), JS Sazanami (DD 113), four helis, SBU and JCG officers has achieved 12 escort missions for 36 Japan linked commercial vessels in all.

    * According to STRATFOR, Stennis headed for South China Sea after a visit to Singapore April 24-27.

  • Yellow Sea (May 1, 2009) - USNS Victorious (T-AGOS-19) received harassments May 1 from two Chinese fishing vessels in the Yellow Sea on routine operations.

    Nearby Chinese government vessel have provided an assistance in response to a Victorious's call though it was negative and then the fishing vessels left.

    Similar incidents occured in the Yellow Sea and South China Sea on Mar.

    * Chinese government said U.S. ship has invaded Chinese EEZ without their permission.

May 1, Northrop Grumman Lays a Keel of California (SSN 781) at Newport News, Va.

Currently, BHR ARG/11th MEU which is consists of USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), USS Cleveland (LPD 7), USS Rushmore (LSD 47) and 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is preparing an upcoming fall deployment.

USS Enterprise (CVN 65) is undergoing an Extended Drydocking Selected Restricted Availability (ESDRA) at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding Newport News. The ESDRA is expected to be completed by Sep. 2009.
