Air-operations - U.S. Navy air-operations as part of Coalition Airpower

CVW 7 that consists of VFA 143 (F/A-18E), VFA 103 (F/A-18F), VFA 83 (F/A-18C[N]), VFA 131 (F/A-18C[N]), VAQ 140 (EA-6B), VAW 121 (E-2C NP) and HS 5 (SH-60F, HH-60H) is conducting air-supports for Operation Enduring Freedom.

Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 74 close-air-support missions
  • * A battle erupted between Coalition and anti-Afghan forces near Qalat (Google Maps). Multiple F/A-18-series F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131) and Super Hornet (VFA 103 or 143) multirole aircraft along with a USAF B-1B engaged anti-Afghan fighting positions clustered around an orchard and overlooking ridgelines. The ground force commander requested air strikes after enemy personnel fired at friendly ground units. Using a combination of several types of guided bomb units and strafing passes, aircraft hit enemy fighting positions placed throughout the area. Additionally, the aircraft destroyed a cave being used as an enemy base.

    * An F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131) responded during firefights between anti-Afghan forces and combined Afghan National Army-Coalition units in the vicinity of Lashkar Gah (Google Maps). The jets employed GBU-12s to hit enemy positions in response to their mortar, RPG and automatic weapons fire.

    * An F/A-18E (VFA 143) executed a show of force over anti-Afghan forces shooting at a Coalition unit in order to suppress their fire. When the enemy shooters were not deterred, the jet hit their position using a GBU-38. Some surviving enemy personnel continued firing, but fled after the jet performed an additional show of force.

    * Coalition aircraft and an F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131) performed shows of force in Lashkar Gah, expending flares, to provide deterrence against enemy attacks against reconstruction supply convoys. The convoys were able to complete their missions without enemy interference.

  • Gulf of Aden (Apr. 30, 2009) - According to Japan Ministry of Defense, The JMSDF antipiracy maritime force had received information of the related organs that a foriegn vessel was being approached by a suspicious boat.

    In response to a information, a SH-60K helicopter performed a reconnaissance after a takeoff aboard JS Samidare (DD 106) as part of the maritime force and then revealed the vessel had no problem.

    Thus far, JMSDF has achieved four protections for no-Japan linked vessels.

  • Fallujah, Iraq (Apr. 30, 2009) - Petty Officer (PO) 2 was killed on April 30 while conducting combat operations for Operation Iraqi Freedom in Fallujah, Iraq. PO2 was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit 12 and was temporarily assigned to a Navy SEAL team.
BAP Arica to arrive at San Diego as part of DESI

  • San Diego, CA (Apr. 30, 2009) - The Peruvian Navy BAP Arica (SS-36) arrives in San Diego as part of the Diesel Electric Submarine Initiative (DESI) program. The DESI Program is a U.S. Navy partnership with South American countries and supports their diesel-electric submarine operations and fleet readiness events in operating areas off the U.S. east and west coasts. Participating DESI partners include Colombia, Peru, Chilie, and Brazil.

  • Pearl Harbor, HI (Apr. 30, 2009) - USS O'Kane (DDG 77) is in a training supporting the Mid-Pacific Surface Combatant Operational Employment program. The program calls for all 11 Hawaii-based surface combatants to focus on the western Pacific Ocean by conducting intermediate and advanced training and regular deployments and is designed to improve the U.S. Pacific Fleet's war fighting readiness and effectiveness.

    * USS Reuben James (FFG 57) is also conducting the program.

  • * Near Kajaki Dam (Google Maps), an F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131) carried out GBU-12 and -38 strikes against anti-Afghan forces bunkers when enemy personnel opened fire with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades against a coalition supply convoy. The aircraft also detected improvised explosive devices enemy forces had planted in the roadway, including one concealed in an animal carcass.

    * In Surkhabad (Google Maps), an F/A-18E (VFA 143) executed a show of force and launched flares when an Afghan National Army and coalition foot patrol started taking fire from enemy gunmen hiding in a civilian compound. The show of force suppressed hostile fire and caused the gunmen to reveal their position. This allowed friendly ground forces to overcome them.

  • Sasebo, Japan (Apr. 29, 2009) - USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) departs from Fleet Activities Sasebo, Japan Apr. 29 after a scheduled visit. Blue Ridge is participating in India, Japan and U.S. bilateral naval exercise "Marabar 2009", an annual exercise led by the Indian Navy.

  • From USS John C. Stennis Public Affairs (Apr. 29, 2009) - The executive officer of USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), Cmdr. David L. Burnham was relieved of his duties April 29 following non-judicial punishment held by Commander, Carrier Strike Group 3, Rear Adm. Mark A. Vance.

    Burnham will report to Commander, Naval Air Forces, in San Diego. Operations Officer Cmdr. Don Glatt will serve temporarily as executive officer.

    John C. Stennis Carrie Strike Group is underway in South China Sea after a visit to Singapore April 24-27 on a scheduled six-month deployment to the western Pacific Ocean.

Coalition Airpower conducted close-air-support missions
  • * F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 83 or 131) dropped GBU-38 and -12s and performed strafing runs to counter an anti-Afghan force which had opened fire on a coalition convoy with automatic weapons and mortars. The aircraft blasted enemy fighting holes nested along ridgelines overlooking the road, ultimately destroying the enemy unit and clearing the road for the convoy to proceed. An Air Force MQ-1B Predator also fired a Hellfire missile during the combat, taking out an enemy position and provided real time reconnaissance for friendly forces.

    * Near Balocan (Google Maps), an F/A-18E (VFA 143) performed a show of force over an enemy position in a Wadi after coalition troops had taken fire from there. The maneuver caused the enemy to cease fire, ending the engagement.

    * In the Lashkar Gah area (Google Maps), a coalition aircraft and F/A-18C[N]s (VFA 83 or 131) and a Super Hornet (VFA 103 or 143) executed shows of force to deter enemy aggression. The aircraft performed shows of force to cover coalition actions, including removing an IED and clearing a suspected enemy compound.

  • Arabian Sea (Apr. 28, 2009) - Three U.S. Navy ships sharing the same hull number, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) as flagship of Eisenhower CSG, USS Vicksburg (CG 69) as part of Eisenhower CSG, and USS Milius (DDG 69), are underway in formation in the Arabian Sea. The three ships are underway supporting the on-going rotation of forward-deployed forces to support maritime security operations and operate in international waters across the globe.

Coalition Airpower conducted 72 close-air-support missions
  • * IVO Kajaki Dam (Google Maps), F/A-18Fs (VFA 103) dropped GBU-38s on anti-Afghan forces fighting positions inside residential compounds. Enemy gunmen had taken cover in the compounds, opening fire on a friendly ground unit with automatic weapons and RPGs. After the strikes destroyed some of the enemy force, ground observers noted that other gunmen were still in the area and requested that the F/A-18Fs fly a show of force. The jets did, and the remaining enemy personnel dispersed from the area.

    * In Lashkar Gah (Google Maps), an F/A-18E (VFA 143) flew a show of force over an area commonly used by enemy personnel to stage attacks. The show of force preemptively suppressed enemy activity as a nearby coalition patrol performed a security sweep of the area.

    * An F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131) over Sangin (Google Maps) performed a show of force after suspicious persons were seen walking back and forth along the side of a commonly used route. The maneuver caused the individuals to run away. A follow up check of the site revealed an improvised explosive device, which was cleared by emergency ordnance disposal techs without incident as the Hornet provided overhead cover.

JMSDF marks a 100th replenishment mission for OEF

  • Indian Ocean (Apr. 27, 2009) - Joint Staff reports Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) has marked a 100th replenishment mission for Operation Enduring Freedom - Maritime Interdiction Operation (OEF-MIO) based on the Replenishment Support Special Measures Law.

    Apr. 27, JS Tokiwa (AOE 423) as part of the 5th dispatch replenishment force conducted a replenishment at sea (RAS) with French Navy FS Aconit (F 713). After the RAS, Tokiwa received a message "100TH RAS THANK YOU VERY MUCH" from Aconit.

    JMSDF started a first replenishment mission for OEF Feb. 21, 2008.

    The 5th dispatch replenishment force has operated since Mar. 16, 2009. The dispatch force is comprised of Towada class oiler JS Tokiwa (AOE 423) and Murasame class destroyer JS Akebono (DD 108).

Russian Navy ships' movements

  • Tsushima Strait (Apr. 26, 2009) - Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Abukuma class destroyer escort JS Tone (DE 234), assigned to 16th ED, confirmed two Russian Navy ships, a Slava class cruiser and a Sorum class fleet tag near Tsushima islands, Sea of Japan. Both ships passed the Tsushima Strait toward North.

    * The cruiser seems to be RFS Varyag (CG 011). Probably, Varyag and a Sorum were underway in the strait after the International Fleet Review of Chinese Navy.

  • Port Everglades (Apr. 27-May 2) - More than 1,000 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen aboard multiple ships arrived at Port Everglades, Fla., April 27 for Fleet Week 2009.

    The crews of USS Ashland (LSD 48), USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), USS Toledo (SSN 769), USCGC Tahoma (WMEC 908), and the Canadian Navy HMCS Preserver (AOR 510), as well as Sailors from Naval Beach Group 2 and Marines from the 2nd Marine Division, will take part in fleet week festivities from April 27 to May 2.

    * Ashland and Forrest Sherman participated in UNITAS Gold until a few days ago near Mayport.

  • Indian Ocean (Apr. 26, 2009) - USS Boxer (LHD 4) conducted an underway replenishment with USNS Walter S. Diehl (T-AO 193). Boxer is deployed as part of Boxer Amphibious Readiness group (ARG)/13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (13th MEU) supporting maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th fleet area of responsibility.

  • Mayport, Fla (Apr. 26, 2009) - High speed vessel Swift (HSV 2) arrived to Mayport, Fla., April 26 to officially mark the completion of the Southern Partnership Station (SPS) 2008-2009 mission.

    SPS is an annual deployment of various specialty platforms to the U.S. Southern Command area of focus in the Caribbean and Latin America.

  • Malé Atoll, Republic of Maldives (Apr. 26, 2009) - USS Mitscher (DDG 57) arrived in the Malé Atoll April 26 for a scheduled port visit.

    During the visit, the ship, which is homeported in Norfolk, Va., will participate in relationship building activities with members of the Maldivian National Defense Force (MNDF).

    * Currently, Mitscher is operating as part of U.K. task force "Taurus 2009".

USS New Orleans enters dry dock in Manama, Bahrain
U.S. Navy: USS New Orleans Enters Dry Dock
  • Manama, Bahrain (Apr. 25, 2009) - USS New Orleans (LPD 18) entered a dry dock at Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard "ASRY" Shipyards in Manama in Manama, Bahrain April 25 to continue repair work on the ship's hull. The repair work is expected to be completed in 10 to 14 days.

    New Orleans was damaged in a collision with USS Hartford (SSN 768) March 20, 2009.

USS Arleigh Burke departs for a scheduled six month deployment
U.S. Navy: Arleigh Burke Departs for Deployment, Exercise Joint Warrior
  • Mayport (Apr. 25, 2009) - USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) departed Naval Station Norfolk Apr. 25 for a six-month deployment in support of maritime operations.

    First of all, Arleigh Burke and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 24 staff will participate in Exercise Joint Warrior 09-1 (May 11-21). The exercise takes place off the coast of the United Kingdom and incorporates American and North Atlantic allied forces. Other U.S. ships paroticpating in the exercise include USS Philippine Sea (CG 58), USS Porter (DDG 78) and USNS Kanawha (T-AH 193).

    * USS New Hampshire (SSN 778) will participate in the exercise.
    * Philippine Sea performed a MEDEVAC of a passenger aboard the cruiser ship Apr. 23 while underway in the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Over Seattle, WA (April 25, 2009) - A Boeing P-8A Poseidon test aircraft T-1 successfully completed a first test flight April 25.

  • Gulf of Aden (Apr. 18-24) - During Apr. 18-24, JMSDF anti piracy maritime force achieved following escort missions in the Gulf of Aden.

    Prior to the mission, a SH-60K helicopter discouraged the suspicious boat from approaching the Canadian vessel after a takeoff aboard JS Sazanami (DD 113).

    John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group (CSG) arrived in Singapore April 24 for a scheduled port visit during a six-month deployment to the western Pacific Ocean.

RSS Persistence joins CTF 151

  • This week (Apr. 24, 2009) - Recently, Singaporean Navy RSS Persistence (209) began counter piracy operations as part of Combined Task Force (CTF) 151 off the coast of Somalia. Persistence will be deploying for three month.

    Prior to joining CTF-151, Persistence's staff visited USS Gettysburg (CG 64) to discuss counterpiracy operations.

    CTF 151 was launched Jan. for multinational counterpiracy efforts around the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and Red Sea.

  • Pearl Harbor, HI (Apr. 23, 2009) - USS Hopper (DDG 70) returned to her homeport of Naval Station Pearl Harbor April 23 following a three month deployment to the Western Pacific in support of the Mid-Pacific Surface Combatant Operational Employment program.

    During the deployment, Hopper joined Stennis CSG and the destroyer was alert to the North Korean ballistic missile with U.S. and Japanese ships.

  • Souda Bay, Greece (Apr. 22, 2009) - Maritime and land forces from 14 countries Algeria, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Libya, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Senegal, Spain, Turkey, Tunisia and the United States kicked off Exercise Phoenix Express (PE09) in Souda Bay, Greece April 22.

    PE09, a two-week exercise designed to increase interoperability and cooperation among regional allies from Africa, Europe and the United States.

    * USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), USS Robert G. Bradley (FFG 49), USNS Laramie (T-AO 201) and USNS Lance Cpl. Roy M. Wheat (T-AK-3016) will represent U.S. Navy in the exercise.

Mar. 24, JMSDF P-3C aircraft (No. 5002) first deactivated from service as their P-3Cs. The aircraft achieved over 15,000 flight hours.

Recently, USS Warrior (MCM 10) and USS Chief (MCM 14) arrived their new homeport San Diego. Eight mine countermeasure ships are scheduled to change their homport to San Diego from Ingleside in accordance with the Defense Base Relocation and Closure Commission.

  • Off the coast of Virginia (Apr. 20-21, 2009) - USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), based in Norfolk, partnered with French ship FS Forbin (D 620) to conduct a passing exercise (PASSEX) off the coast just north of Virginia Apr. 20-21.

    Horizon class air defense destroyer Forbin was commissioned in last December and was sent on deployment in March.

  • Everett, WA (Apr. 21, 2009) - USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG 60) returned to the ship's homeport at Naval Station Everett April 21 following a six-month deployment in the East Pacific in support of counter narco-terrorism.

    The Davis and crew completed their mission, seizing six tons of cocaine and 160 pounds of marijuana, as well as disrupting 18 tons of cocaine and three tons of marijuana shipments.

    In response to a call, a SH-60K helicopter discouraged the boat from approaching the vessel after a takeoff aboard the destroyer.

    JMSDF anti piracy maritime force which consists of JS Samidare (DD 106), Sazanami, four helis, SBU and JCG officers has conducted escort missions for Japan linked commercial vessels since Mar. 30 in the Gulf of Aden.

  • Tokyo, Japan (Apr. 16, 2009) - Joint Staff announced JMSDF 4th replenishment force which cosists of Towada class oiler JS Towada (AOE 422), homeported in JMSDF Kure Base, and Murasame class destroyer JS Ariake (DD 109), homeported in JMSDF Sasebo Base, will return to each homeport on Apr. 27 following completed a replenishment operation for coalition ships in Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean.

    Recently, The 5th force took over the operation. The dispatch force is comprised of Towada class JS Tokiwa (AOE 423) and Murasame class JS Akebono (DD 108).

  • Gulf of Aden (Apr. 15, 2009) - JMSDF anti piracy maritime force completed a 7th escort mission for a vessel Apr. 15 in the Gulf of Aden.

    Thus far, the maritime force which consists of JS Samidare (DD 106), JS Sazanami (DD 113), four helis, SBU and JCG officers has achieved 7 escort missions for 21 Japan linked commercial vessels in all.

    Balikatan, an annual Republic of the Philippines-U.S. bilateral military humanitarian assistance and training exercise, will take place in the Philippines April 16-30.

    Apr. 8, U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama was hijacked by somali pirates off the east coast of Somalia. The pirates still have taken the American skipper as a hostage.

    * Several ships including USS Bainbridge (DDG 96), USS Halyburton (FFG 40) and U.S. Navy P-3C aircraft arrived in the location.

  • West of Gulf of Aden (Apr. 11, 2009) - Japan MoD reported that prior to the 5th escort mission for Japan linked vessels, JS Samidare (DD 106) had helped a Malta-registered vessel being approached by a suspicious boat Apr. 11 (3:00 p.m./JST) in the west of Gulf of Aden.

    Samidare discouraged the boat from approaching by warning and safely helped the vessel. It is not clear whether the boat is pirate.

Japan MoD: 補給支援活動の実績について (平成21年3月分)
  • Tokyo, Japan (Apr. 10, 2009) - Japan Ministry of Defense reported that achievements of Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) replenishment operation for Operation Enduring Freedom - Maritime Interdiction Operation (OEF-MIO) on Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean until Mar. 2009. The operation is based on the Replenishment Support Special Measures Law.

    JMSDF has achieved refueling of 17,735 kiloliter (920 Kl for Mar.) for 95 coalition ships (6 ships for Mar.) on the operation since Feb. 2008.

    Currently, The 5th dispatch force has conducted the operation since Mar. 16, 2009. The dispatch force is comprised of Towada class oiler JS Tokiwa (AOE 423) and Murasame class destroyer JS Akebono (DD 108).

Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 62 close-air-support missions
  • * In Tarin Kowt (Google Maps) , enemy personnel occupied a compound in the vicinity of a local marketplace, firing from behind walls, windows and doorways at a coalition unit in the area. During the extended firefight that ensued, multiple U.S. Navy, USAF and coalition aircraft responded, using strafing runs and Hellfire missiles to destroy the anti-Afghan fighting position. This selection of weapons intentionally minimized damage to the structure and adjacent civilian buildings.

    * In the mountains near Lashkar Gah (Google Maps), an F/A-18E (VFA 143) strafed enemy personnel shooting from a tree line. The enemy gunmen had opened fire on a coalition mounted patrol, prompting the aircraft to intervene. A second Super Hornet (VFA 103 or 143) performed a show of force and launched flares to deter enemy reinforcements from moving into the fight.

    * In addition to carrying out weapons strikes, U.S. Navy, USAF and coalition aircraft performed a number of shows of force in several parts of Afghanistan. The shows of force deterred and suppressed enemy actions, reducing their interference with Afghan government and coalition efforts to rebuild and secure the country.

    * Over the Lashkar Gah area (Google Maps), an F/A-18F (VFA 103) flew a show of force over a group who appeared to be setting up an IED. The maneuver prevented the individuals from succeeding while avoiding risk to nearby civilians.

    * A Super Hornet (VFA 103 or 143) executed a show of force near Garmser/Germsir (Google Maps) in response to sporadic gunfire against a Coalition convoy coming from the surrounding area. The maneuver suppressed enemy fire so the convoy could complete its mission without further interference.

    * An F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131) carried out a show of force in southern Afghanistan to provide presence during a helicopter medevac operation. The maneuver deterred enemy activity so patients could be safely transported from the landing zone.

In addition, JS Sazanami (DD 113) deterred four suspected pirates from approaching a Singapore registered tanker Apr. 3 (local time).

    The maritime force which consists of JS Samidare (DD 106), JS Sazanami (DD 113), four SH-60K helicopters, Special Boarding Unit (SBU) and eight Japan Coast Guard officers had departed from JMSDF Kure Base on Mar. 14 and started the operation Mar. 30.

Japan didn't enforce the intercept because its debris had no threat to Japanese territory.

    * U.S. said the rocket failed to put into orbit its satellite.

A variety of GBU-series precision weaponry was used to carry out the strike, which took place in response to anti-Afghan mortar fire.

    In addition, today Japan and Djibouti sign a status of forces agreement (SOFA) concerning JMSDF anti piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden.

    * Mar. 30, JMSDF anti piracy maritime force began escort in Gulf of Aden.
    * According to Kyodo News, the SOFA is effective for 12 months, will automatically be renewed in 1-year terms. Either side wishing to terminate the deal must give notice no less than six months ahead of time.

    JS Sazanami (DD 113) as part of the maritime force aided a Singapore-registered tanker being approached by suspicious boats. The destroyer repelled four boats in all without using gunfire shortly after a radio call of the tanker.

    It is unclear whether they are pirates.

    On Apr. 3 PM 01:30 (JST), a JMSDF P-3 aircraft (FAW 5) confirmed a Chinese Navy ship (Hull number: 805) that sailed toward south east. Joint Staff said it is not clear on the ship name and the ship class. Additionally, on PM 04:00 a P-3C (FAW 5) confirmed a Wozang class minehunter sailing toward east in the area.

  • Bahrain (Apr. 3, 2009) - The Republic of Korea (ROK) Task Group Chung-Hae and its flagship ROKS Munmu the Great (DDG 976) arrived in Bahrain April 3 to make a port visit before joining Combined Task Force (CTF) 151 in the Gulf of Aden conducting counterpiracy operations.

    Munmu the Great is the first ROK navy warship to be deployed to the Middle East since the establishment of the Korean Navy 64 years ago.

  • * An F/A-18E (VFA-143) and a USAF MQ-9A dropped GBU-12 and 38s on anti-Afghan compounds near Kajaki Dam (Google Maps). Several enemy gunmen, who had been firing rocket propelled grenades and assault rifles at a Coalition patrol from the structures, were killed in the strikes. The aircraft also provided overwatch to the convoy and provided tactical surveillance.

  • Near Tushima islands, Sea of Japan (Apr. 1, 2009) - Joint Staff, Japan MoD reported Japan Maritime Self Defense (JMSDF) Hatsuyuki class destroyer JS Asayuki (DD 132) that is assigned to 13th Escort Division spotted four Russian Navy ships sailing toward south west near Tushima islands, Sea of Japan on Apr. 1. morning.

    Following ships were observed.
    an Udaloy I class destroyer, a Dubna class replenishment ship, an Altay mod class tanker and a Sorum class fleet tag.

    * Four ships seem to be sailing toward the coast of Somalia for the anti piracy operation.

  • Gulf of Aden (Apr. 1, 2009) - USS Boxer (LHD 4) is deployed as flagship of Combined Task Force (CTF) 151. The multinational task force is conducting counter-piracy operations to detect and deter piracy in and around the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and Red Sea.

  • Limbe, Cameroon (Apr. 1, 2009) - USS Nashville (LPD 13) arrived in Limbe, Cameroon, April 1 to conduct a two-week port visit as part of the ongoing Africa Partnership Station (APS) initiative. During the visit, the APS team will conduct engagements both afloat and ashore.

    The APS Nashville mission began in January and will run through May. Port visits thus far have included stops in Senegal, Ghana, Liberia and Nigeria. Following the visit to Cameroon, APS Nashville will travel to Libreville and Port Gentil, Gabon.

  • Norfolk (Apr. 1, 2009) - USS Ramage (DDG 61) returns to homeport at Naval Station Norfolk after a seven-month deployment. Ramage deployed as a part of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility.

    * Other ships of Iwo Jima ESG already returned to each homeports.

  • Norfolk (Apr. 1, 2009) - The hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) departs from Naval Station Norfolk for a four-month deployment to the U.S. Southern Command area of focus in support of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and U.S. Fourth Fleets Continuing Promise 2009 (CP09). Comfort provides the region a mobile, flexible and rapidly responsive afloat medical capability for a number of missions and training opportunities in the Caribbean, Central and South America.
