The enemy personnel continued to try to escape on foot until they were apprehended by Coalition soldiers.

    * Near Gereshk (Google Maps), F/A-18E and Fs supported a combined Afghan National Army and Coalition ground force raid on several enemy compounds. Using a series of precision GBU-38 strikes to augment ground attacks, the aircraft destroyed several enemy facilities and fighting positions, including a sizeable weapons cache. Sixteen enemy fighters were killed during the engagement, with three Taliban commanders among them. Key to the combined operations' success was the presence of ground observers who pinpointed targets and verified that civilians were not present in the targeted area.

    * Over Kandahar (Google Maps), a Super Hornet flew a show of force and expended flares to suppress enemy fire as Coalition troops engaged anti-Afghan forces on the streets below. The maneuver was successful, prompting the enemy to cease fire and withdraw.

  • * An F/A-18F conducted a strafing pass against enemy forces dug in behind a line of trees along a road near Lashkar Gah. The Super Hornet had been flying overwatch for a coalition convoy when enemy gunfire erupted from the roadside. While the jet's cannons quickly ended the direct threat to the convoy, the aircraft followed up with a show of force and expended flares to deter a possible enemy counterattack.

    * Super Hornets provided several shows of force and expended flares during an enemy attack against coalition personnel patrolling near Sangin (Google Maps). The aircraft withheld weapons fire to prevent endangering civilians in the area but enemy forces were successfully dispersed.

    * Over a civilian settlement near Lashkar Gah, an F/A-18C Hornet and a USAF F-15E conducted shows of force as deterrents to enemy forces. Enemy gunmen were spotted trying to gain firing positions against coalition convoys travelling through, but were forced to take cover and withdraw. The aircraft tracked the gunmen's movements through the town, but did not engage because enemy personnel stayed close by local civilians, evidently using them as a shield.

Voice of Heart

Recently, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) P-3C maritime patrol aircraft assigned to FAW 2 observed sea-ice off the coast of the Okhotsk Sea.

JMSDF has conducted aerial observations of the sea-ice for not only support to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) but also the prevention of disasters and accidents in every winter.

Well, it's so cold in Japan, I sound stuffed up...
