Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 69 close-air-support missions
  • * In the vicinity of Shurakian (Google Maps) and Kajaki Dam (Google Maps), a USAF B-1B and U.S. Navy F/A-18Cs dropped a GBU-12 and GBU-38s onto anti-Afghan forces who were firing rocket-propelled grenades at coalition forces conducting operations in the area.     Capt. Stephen Gillespie has temporarily assumed command of West Virginia (Gold). Gillespie, a former commanding officer of USS Rhode Island (SSBN 740), was most recently assigned as deputy for training at Submarine Squadron 16/20.

    Hill will be temporarily assigned to Commander, Submarine Squadron 20.

  • Gulf of Aden (Dec. 29, 2008) - Sailors from Mobile Security Squadron (MSS) 3 are providing force protection for Military Sealift Command (MSC) fleet replenishment oiler USNS Tippecanoe (T-AO 199) while the ship conducts operations in the Gulf of Aden.

    Tippecanoe is crewed by civil service mariners working for MSC, and MSS 3 has been tasked with safeguarding the ship's crew and cargo while it conducts replenishment at sea operations off the coast of Somalia.

Akahoshi reports JS Chokai (DDG 176) passed the system qualification trials/SQT of Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) system though Chokai failed a test of BMD capability, Japan Flight Test Mission 2 (JFTM-2) on Nov. 20 off the coast of Hawaii. CMS said that not the system but its warhead of SM-3 missile had problem.

  • Off the coast of Southern California (Dec. 5-12, 2008) - The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is conducting its certification exercise (CERTEX) aboard USS Boxer (LHD 4) off the coast of Southern California, Dec. 5-12.

    CERTEX is the final graded evaluation the Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group (BOXESG) must complete in order to be certified as ready to deploy. The exercise focuses on assessing the capability of the 13th MEU to operate in conjunction with Boxer and the ships of the ESG to complete joint operations.

U.S. Navy: VP-46 Returns From Multi-Theater Deployment, Maintains Stellar Safety Record
  • NAS Whidbey IslandThe (Dec. 10, 2008) - "Grey Knights" of Patrol Squadron (VP) 46 returned to Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island Dec. 10 after a six-month deployment in support of operations in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

    Their seven P-3C Orion aircrafts flew more than 650 missions and logged approximately 4,300 flight hours while on deployment in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, United States Africa Command and United States 7th Fleet.

  • Eastern Pacific Ocean (Dec. 5, 2008) - While on patrol in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, the combined team of USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG 60), with embarked HSL-43 Det. 2, and USCG LEDET-106 intercepted the fishing vessel in an early morning interdiction, captured nine suspected narcotics smugglers and the large cargo of more 4 metric cocaine with an estimated import value of $90 million on Dec. 5.

    Currently, Rodney M. Davis is deployed to U.S. 4th Fleet AOR for counter illicit trafficking operations. .

U.S. Navy: Essex Increases Joint, Combined Interoperability During Fall Patrol
  • Sasebo, Japan (Dec. 4, 2009) - USS Essex (LHD 2) arrived in Sasebo after the completion of a successful fall patrol Dec. 4. Fall patrol included the Evaluation Exercise (EVALEX), the Amphibious Landing Exercise (PHIBLEX), the Korean Interoperability Training Program (KITP), and ANNUALEX 20G.

    Upon arrival in Japan, Essex Sailors immediately(*) began a unit level training assessment-anti-terrorism/force protection (ULTRA-ATFP), designed to test their ability to defend the ship against a terrorist attack. Once completed, many Essex Sailors will be looking forward to spending the holidays at home.
