  • Hong Kong (Nov. 26, 2008) - USS Essex (LHD 2) departs Hong Kong Nov. 26 following a scheduled four-day port visit.

    During the visit, Sailors had the chance to meet local citizens, experience local customs and traditions, and enjoy the many recreational activities offered in Hong Kong.

    Essex is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed U.S. Expeditionary Strike Group and serves as the flagship for Commander Task Force 76, the Navy's forward-deployed amphibious force commander. CTF 76 is headquartered at White Beach Naval Facility, Okinawa, Japan, with a detachment in Sasebo, Japan.

    ESGINT is a pre-deployment exercises designed to test the fundamental capabilities and shipboard interoperability between vessels from the ESG and Marines.

    Bataan's Sailors and Marines will continue preparing for deployment by completing a composite unit training exercise (COMPUTEX) and certification exercise (CERTEX) early next year.   • Coast of Southern California (Nov. 16, 2008) - The John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group (JCSCSG) successfully completed Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX) off the coast of Southern California Nov. 16 for the early next year deployment.

    JTFEX is the last pre-deployment exercise the JCSCSG had to complete before deployment. With JTFEX complete, the strike group is certified as ready for major combat operations, fully prepared to deploy in support of America's Maritime Strategy.

  • New York (Nov. 12, 2008) - USS Bataan (LHD 5) departed New York after completing a seven-day port visit Nov. 12, celebrating Veterans Day and supporting the reopening and re-christening of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.

    Bataan will participate in an at-sea group exercise with members of the 22d Marine Corps Expeditionary Unit and the other ships of the Bataan Strike Group before returning to Norfolk later this month.

Eight F-15s, two F-2 from JASDF and six F/A-18s, a E-2C from CVW 5 will participate in the exercise.

  • Tokyo, Japan (Nov. 10, 2008) - Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA, Japan) lodged a protest to U.S. about USS Providence (SSN 719) made a brief visit to White Beach U.S. Naval Facility, Okinawa, Japan on Nov. 10 without a requirement prior notice of U.S. nuclear submarines arrival under a bilateral agreement.

    U.S. said to the ministry that the incident was caused by miss-communication in the U.S. Navy and that the U.S. government regretted it.

    Nuclear warships and weapons are a sensitive topic for Japan, the only country that has suffered atomic attacks.

    With COMPTUEX complete, Stennis CSG will soon join with forces from other nations and services to tackle Joint Training Force Exercise (JTFEX).

Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 70 close-air-support missions
  • * USAF F-15Es and U.S. Navy F/A-18Fs dropped GBU-12s, GBU-38s and fired cannon rounds onto a building where anti-Afghan forces were hunkered down and firing at coalition forces near Kandahar (Google Maps). The mission was confirmed a success by a JTAC.

  • * Near Qalat (Google Maps), U.S. Navy F/A-18Cs fired cannon rounds onto enemy fighters who were attacking a coalition convoy with RPGs and small arms fire. A JTAC reported the mission successful.

  • * In the vicinity of Shurakian (Google Maps), a U.S. Navy F-18C conducted a show of force to deter enemy activities. A JTAC reported the mission successful.

  • Persian Gulf (Nov. 1, 2008) - USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) is deployed as part of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group supporting maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.

    * Carter Hall is currently serving as an afloat forward staging base (AFSB) in the North Arabian Gulf (NAG) as part of Combined Task Force (CTF) 158 for the training platform for Iraqi Sailors and Marines to conduct interaction patrols with dhows.

  • Northwest of Kauai, Hawaii (Nov. 1, 2008) - USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60) launched the SM-3 as part of Pacific Blitz 08 in the open ocean area northwest of Kauai, Hawaii. The SM-3 successfully collided with a ballistic missile target launched from the Pacific Missile Range Test Facility (PMRF) at Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii.

    * According to Missile Defense Agency (MDA), USS Hopper (DDG-70) also participated in Pacific Blitz 08. Following Paul Hamilton’s engagement, PMRF launched another target. The ship successfully detected, tracked and engaged the target. The SM-3 followed a nominal trajectory, however intercept was not achieved.

    Reagan CSG is on a routine deployment in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility. Its ships include USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) and the other ships of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 7, USS Decatur (DDG 73), USS Gridley (DDG 101), and USS Howard (DDG 83), USS Thach (FFG 43).
