Dispatch of the 4th replenishmet unit for OEF-MIO
Japan JSO: 補給支援活動のための部隊の出港について (PDF file)
  • Tokyo, Japan (Oct. 30, 2008) - Japan Joint Staff Office (JSO) announced Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force will dispatch the 4th replenishment unit for Operation Enduring Freedom - Maritime Interdiction Operation (OEF-MIO) on Nov. 11. The unit is comprised of Towada Class oiler JS Towada (AOE 422), Murasame class destroyer JS Ariake (DD 109).

    * Currently, the 3rd replenishment unit has conducted the operations since July 24. The unit is comprised of Towada class oiler JS Hamana (AOE 424), Murasame class destroyer JS Yudachi (DD 103).

  • Missile Defense Agency, U.S. DoD (Oct. 30, 2008) - According to Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Kongo class destroyer JS Chokai (DDG 176) is one step closer toward her anticipated ballistic missile defense intercept flight test on Nov. in the vicinity of Hawaii. Chokai will be 2nd BMD Aegis ship as JMSDF.

  • Norfolk (Oct. 29, 2008) - The Dutch submarine HNLMS Walrus (SSK S802) and USS Tucson (SSN 770) share a pier at Naval Station Norfolk. U.S. and Dutch naval forces participated in TACDEVEX 08-08 in the Cape Cod operation areas. During the eight-day exercise, a number of torpedoes were employed to evaluate U.S. tactics and weapons against a modern SSK in a challenging environment.

  • Olongapo, Republic of the Philippines (Oct. 29, 2008) - Sailors from the USS Denver (LPD 9) and Philippine Navy (PN) visited New Cabalan National High School in Olongapo, Republic of the Philippines, Oct. 29 to improve the campus' buildings and deliver donated supplies.

    USS Denver, on her first patrol following a highly successful hull swap with the USS Juneau (LPD 10), is the only amphibious transport dock forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan. Denver is part of the Essex Expeditionary Strike Group and serves as part of Task Force 76, the Navy's only forward deployed amphibious force. Task Force 76 is headquartered at White Beach Naval Facility, Okinawa, Japan.

Boxer ESG prepares its upcoming deployment
U.S. Navy: BOXESG Readies for Deployment with Anti-Terrorism Exercise
  • Naval Base San Diego (Oct. 27-28, 2008) - Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) participated in a two-day force protection exercise (FPE) at Naval Base San Diego Oct. 27-28.

    The FPE is one of several qualifications BOXESG must complete to become certified for its upcoming deployment. Boxer ESG is scheduled for more training exercises this fall to prepare for its upcoming deployment on early next year.

U.S. Navy: EODMU 11 Platoon Returns After Improving Safety in Iraq
  • Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (Oct. 28, 2008) - The platoon from Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 11 returned to Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island Oct. 28 after a six-month deployment to Iraq.

    Platoon 11-2-2 was deployed in support of the U.S. Army 4th Brigade 10th Mountain Division in Tallil, Iraq, as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

    EODMU 11 is part of the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC). NECC includes 40,000 Sailors across the force which enable each of the six core competencies of the maritime strategy. Currently, NECC forces are deployed around the globe, supporting real-world missions, exercises and theater security cooperation activities.

    Theodore Roosevelt relieved USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) in the Gulf of Oman as part of a normal rotation of forces and marked the end of the Reagan Strike Group’s deployment to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations (AOO). Reagan operated in theater since August supporting Coalition forces operating on the ground in Afghanistan.

  • Goa, India (Oct. 18, 2008) - USS Chancellorsville (CG 62), USS Gridley (DDG 101), USS Thach (FFG 43) from Reagan CSG/CSG 7 arrived in the Indian port city of Goa to kick off Exercise Malabar, a bilateral training event with the Indian Navy Oct. 18.

    Malabar 2008 is the 10th exercise hosted by India in which the United States Navy has participated. This year’s exercise, which takes place in the Arabian Sea, also includes USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) with embarked CVW 14, USS Decatur (DDG 73), USNS Bridge (T-AOE 10) and USS Springfield (SSN 761). The Indian Navy contingent includes three guided-missile destroyers, four guided-missile frigates, an underway replenishment ship and a submarine.

  • Tokyo, Japan (Oct. 17, 2008) - The article about activities of two Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) submarines appeared in the Sankei Shimbun on Oct. 17.

    According to the article, early Oct., Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) detected two Chinese PLAN submarines in East China Sea (outside Japanese territorial waters). Apparently, One of submarines is the Han class SSN and other is the conventional boat.

    At the time, USS George Washington (GW) (CVN 73) was heading to Busan, South Korea for participate in the Fleet Review. Recently, JMSDF has increased anti-submarine patrols because they concluded that Chinese PLAN ambushed GW and attempted information gathering or demonstration.

  • Coast of Southern California (Oct. 16, 2008) - Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) completed their Expeditionary Strike Group Integration (ESGINT) exercise off the coast of Southern California Oct. 16.

    ESGINT was the first of three pre-deployment exercises for the strike group in preparation for a deployment scheduled for early next year.

  • 27 Febrero Naval Base, Dominican Republic (Oct. 16, 2008) - Local government and military officials hosted a ceremony at 27 Febrero Naval Base Oct. 16 to commemorate the completion of USS Kearsarge's (LHD 3) Continuing Promise (CP) 2008 14-day operations in the Dominican Republic.

    The Kearsarge CP mission now sails toward Curacao, Netherlands Antilles, for a brief port visit. Then to Trinidad and Tobago where similar medical, veterinary, dental and engineering support will be provided.

    * Recently, Kearsarge reached mid-deployment of CP 08.

    While supporting OEF and OIF from the Persian Gulf and North Arabian Sea, Lincoln and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2 flew approximately 7,100 sorties - including 2,307 combat sorties, providing more than 22,000 flight hours - and dropped 255,963 pounds of ordnance.

  • PSNS & IMF (Oct. 15, 2008) - USS San Francisco (SSN 711) returned to the water Oct. 10 after successfully undocking at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF), a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).

    The dry-docking resulted from the submarine's Jan. 8, 2005, collision with an undersea mountain. The challenging, one-of-a-kind project involved PSNS & IMF cutting more than one million pounds of ex-USS Honolulu (SSN 718) forward ballast tanks/sonar sphere and attaching it to USS San Francisco.

  • Tokyo, Japan (Oct. 9, 2008) - Japan Ministry of Defense reported that achievements of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) replenishment operations for Operation Enduring Freedom - Maritime Interdiction Operation (OEF-MIO) on Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean in September 2008. The operations is based on the Replenishment Support Special Measures Law.

    * Currently, the 3rd dispatch unit has conducted the operations since July 24. The unit is comprised of Towada class oiler JS Hamana (AOE 424), Murasame class destroyer JS Yudachi (DD 103).

TR CSG completed exercise with South African and French navies
U.S. Navy: Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group Completes Multinational Exercise
  • Indian Ocean (Oct. 9, 2008) - USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and USS Monterey (CG 61) from the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TR CSG), assigned to Commander U.S. 6th Fleet, participated in a one-day theater security cooperation (TSC) exercise with South African Navy SAS Isandlwana (F146), SAS Drakensburg (A301), SAS Isaac Dyobia (P1565) and French Navy FN Floreal (F730) while underway in the Indian Ocean.

    TR CSG has conducted regularly scheduled deployment. Recently, USS Theodore Roosevelt visited to Cape Town, South Africa.

U.S. Navy: Boxer's Blue, Green Medical Team Preps for Deployment
  • Pacific Ocean (Oct. 9, 2008) - USS Boxer's (LHD 4) Medical Department, Fleet Surgical Team (FST) 5 and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) tested their emergency medical response skills Oct. 9 during a shipboard mass casualty drill as part of Expeditionary Strike Group Integration (ESGINT). ESGINT is an exercise designed to integrate the different command elements of the strike group prior to deploying.

    Boxer is scheduled for more training exercises this fall, then deploy as flagship of Boxer ESG on early next year to WestPac.

U.S. Navy: Lincoln Strike Group Returns to San Diego, Air Wing Departs
  • San Diego (Oct. 8, 2008) - Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group pulled into San Diego after a seven-month deployment supporting maritime security operations in 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility.

    During its deployment, Lincoln worked alongside coalition partners in the 5th Fleet AOR. The strike group, along with CVW 2 successfully flew more than 7,100 sorties and completed more than 22,000 flying hours, supporting coalition ground forces.

    CVW 2 disembarked the strike group's flagship USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). The ship will get underway Oct. 9 to return to her homeport of Everett, Wash.

  • Off the coast of Cherry Point (Oct. 4, 2008) - According to Navy Times, U.S. Navy identified the sailor killed aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Aircraft Handling) PO2 (AW) was hit by a plane and died during launch operation on Oct. 4, off the coast of Cherry Point. An investigation is underway.

    USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) anchored off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa, Oct. 4. USS Monterey (CG 61) is pier side in Cape Town after arriving Oct. 3.

    TR CSG has conducted regularly scheduled deployment.

According to SeaWaves Magazine, USS Mason (DDG 87) arrived in Republic of Georgia on Oct. 4. Mason is deployed as part of TR CSG.
