  • Souda bay, Crete (Sep. 1, 2008) - USS Mount Whitney (LCC/JCC 20) departs Souda harbor following a routine port visit. Mount Whitney is homeported in Gaeta, Italy, where she recently received humanitarian aid supplies destined for the Republic of Georgia. Mount Whitney is transiting to the Black Sea for delivery of the humanitarian assistance cargo to the Republic of Georgia as part of "Operation Assured Delivery".

U.S. Navy: U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Arrives in Sevastopol, Ukraine
  • Sevastopol, Ukraine (Sep. 1, 2008) - USCG Dallas (WHEC 716) enters in Sevastopol, Ukraine 1 to participate in previously scheduled theater security cooperation activities with the Ukrainian Navy.

    On Aug. 27, the cutter became the second U.S. military ship to deliver humanitarian aid supplies to Georgia as a part of Operation Assured Delivery, the ongoing U.S. mission to bring relief supplies to the conflict-torn country.

  • North Arabian Sea (Sep. 1, 2008) - USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) received supplies from USN Rainer (T-AOE 7). Lincoln is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility supporting Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom as well as maritime security operations.

    * Reagan CSG relieved Lincoln CSG on Aug. 28, who has operated in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations since April.

  • Gulf of Aden (Sep. 1, 2008) - USS Gridley (DDG 101) is on a routine deployment as of Regan CSG to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
USS Essex departs Tokyo
C7F, U.S. Navy: Essex Departs Tokyo After Successful Port Visit and Exercise
  • Tokyo, Japan (Sep. 1, 2008) - USS Essex (LHD 2) departed Tokyo Sep. 1, after completing the evacuation phase of this year’s Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Kanagawa Prefecture Government disaster response drills.

    During the six-day visit, Sailors assigned to Essex and Assault Craft Unit (ACU) 5, Detachment Western Pacific, responded to simulated natural disasters in Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. They also had the opportunity to experience the city of Tokyo, Japan’s largest city, with a population of more than 12 million people.

    Essex will now return to its forward-deployed home of Sasebo, Japan, for a brief stop in preparation for its annual fall patrol.

    * Sep. 1 is the Disaster Prevention Day in Japan.

  • Norfolk (Aug. 30, 2008) - USS Vella Gulf (CG 72) deploys as part of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group to support maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility.

U.S. Navy: DoD Identifies Navy Casualty
  • Afghanistan (Aug. 30, 2008) - PO1 died Aug. 30 from injuries sustained while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan. He was temporarily forward deployed from his assignment at Naval Special Warfare Development Group, Dam Neck, Va.
