  • Norfolk (Aug. 29, 2008) - USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) Carrier Strike Group (CSG) will deploy early September as part of the on-going rotation of forward-deployed forces to support maritime security operations and operate in international waters across the globe.

The 1st prototype XP-1 was delivered to TRDI by KHI

  • Kagamihara city, Gifu Prefecture, Japan (Aug. 29, 2008) - The 1st prototype XP-1 was delivered to Technical Research and Development Institute (TRDI), Japan MoD by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Inc.) in Gifu works, KHI. TRDI plans to have completed the test and evaluation for XP-1 by 2011.

    The next generation maritime patrol aircraft XP-1 will developed to replace JMSDF P-3Cs and provide increased capability in long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare.

  • Norfolk (Aug. 29, 2008) - USS Ramage (DDG 61) deploys from Naval Station Norfolk as part of the Iwo Jima ESG to support maritime security operations and theater security cooperation (TSC) efforts in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility.
USS Green Bay will be commissioned in Jan. '09
U.S. Navy: Navy Accepts Delivery of Green Bay
  • New Orleans (Aug. 29, 2008) - U.S. Navy accepted delivery of Green Bay (LPD 20) from Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding (NGSB) in New Orleans, La., Aug. 29. This is the fourth ship of the San Antonio class of amphibious transport dock ships NGSB has delivered.

    In late November, Green Bay will transit through the Panama Canal en route to its homeport of San Diego where it will join sister ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18). In late January 2009, Green Bay will be commissioned in a formal ceremony in Long Beach, Calif.

  • San Diego (Aug. 29, 2008) - USS Tarawa (LHA 1) returned from her last operational exercise "Fuerzas Aliadas Panamax 2008 in the Panama Canal zone".

    USS Tarawa will be decommissioned March 31, 2009, at Naval Base San Diego.

Ford's scheduled Sep. visit to Russia has been canceled because conflict between Russian and Georgian forces. The ship participated in CARAT, SEACAT.

  • Indian Ocean (Aug. 28, 2008) - Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group assumed the duties as Commander, Task Force (CTF) 50 Aug. 28 and launched its first sorties into Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

    Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group relieved the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group who has operated in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations since Apr. '08

  • San Diego (Aug. 28, 2008) - USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) departs San Diego as she makes the voyage to her new homeport of Bremerton. Kitty Hawk is expected to arrive at Bremerton's Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Sept. 2 for decommissioning in early 2009.
SNMG 1 in Black Sea on routine visit
NATO: NATO ships in Black Sea on routine visit, unrelated to Georgia crisis
  • Black Sea (July 28, 2008) - The Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1), a group of NATO warships, conducts routine port visits and exercises with NATO member nations bordering the Black Sea since 21 August.

    This deployment is routine in nature and has been planned for over a year, notification of the requirement to transit the Turkish Straits was given in June well before the current Georgia crisis and is completely unrelated. In accordance with the terms of the Montreux Convention, the ships will stay no longer than 21 days in the Black Sea.

    SNMG 1 currently comprises the Spanish SPS Adm Juan de Borbon (F 102), the German, FGS Luebeck (F 214) and the Polish, ORP General K Pulaski (272) and the US frigate, USS Taylor (FFG 50).

    A fifth member of SNMG1, the Canadian frigate HMCS Ville de Quebec (FFH 332) was recently detached from the group to escort World Food Programme shipping off the coast of Somalia under Canadian national authority.

    The ships are currently in Constanta, Romania and will conduct exercises with Bulgarian and Romanian ships as well as paying a port visit to Varna, Bulgaria before leaving the Black Sea.
Return of JMSDF Unit from replenishment operations in Arabian Sea

  • Tokyo, Japan (Aug. 28, 2008) - Japan Joint Staff Ofiice announced Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Second dispatch unit will return to each homeports on Sep. 4 following completed replenishment operations for support to OEF-MIO. The operations is based on the Replenishment Support Special Measures Law. The unit is comprised of Mashu class oiler JS Mashu (AOE 425), homeported JMSDF Maizuru base and Murasame class destroyer JS Ikazuchi (DD 107), homeported JMSDF Yokosuka base.

    * Now, The 3rd dispatch unit has deployed to the operations since July 24. 3rd unit is made up of Towada class oiler JS Hamana (AOE 424), Murasame class destroyer JS Yudachi (DD 103).

  • coast of Southern California (Aug. 28, 2008) - USS George Washington (CVN 73) is transiting off the coast of Southern California conducting combat operations efficiency evaluation with Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5. George Washington is en route to Yokosuka, Japan, where the ship will replace the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) as the Navy's only forward deployed aircraft carrier.

  • Red Sea (Aug. 27, 2008) - USS Peleliu (LHA 5) conducts operations in the Red Sea. Peleliu is deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility supporting maritime security operations.

U.S. Navy: Sixth Fleet Deploys Ships in Support of Humanitarian Assistance Mission
  • Naples, Italy (Aug. 27, 2008) - Two U.S. Navy ships and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter are getting underway to transport humanitarian relief supplies to Georgia. These deployments are part of the larger United States response mission "Operation Assured Delivery" to the government of Georgia request for humanitarian assistance.

    USS McFaul (DDG 74) arrived in Batumi on Aug. 24 delivering 155,000 pounds of aid to Georgia. McFaul departed from Souda Bay, Crete on Aug. 20.

    USS Mount Whitney (LCC/JCC 20) is scheduled to deploy for Georgia at the end of the month with more supplies.

    USCG Dallas (WHEC 716) pulled into port in Batumi, Georgia on Aug. 27 to deliver humanitarian relief supplies. Dallas left Souda Bay on Aug. 21.

    U.S. Navy C-9 jet carrying humanitarian assistance arrived in Tbilisi, Georgia on Aug. 18 marking the Navy's first humanitarian assistance mission to the region. C-9, C-40 and C-130 aircraft have flown tens of thousands of hygiene kits and more than 30 tons of meals ready-to-eat into the country during the past week.

  • Tokyo, Japan (Aug. 27, 2008) - USS Essex (LHD 2) pulls into Tokyo, Japan for a scheduled port visit and disaster management drill. At the request of the Tokyo Metropolitan government, Essex will be involved in the evacuation phase of this year's Tokyo Metropolitan government and Kanagawa Prefecture government disaster response drill.

  • Black Sea (Aug. 26, 2008) - USCG Dallas (WHEC 716) and USS McFaul (DDG 74) transit through the Black Sea en route to the Republic of Georgia to deliver humanitarian relief supplies. Dallas is carrying more than 76,000 pounds of supplies, including soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, baby wipes, toilet paper and other necessities.

    * McFaul arrived in Batumi, Republic of Georgia on Aug. 24.

USS McFaul arrives in Batumi, Republic of Georgia
U.S. Navy: USS McFaul Brings Aid to Batumi, Georgia
  • Batumi, Republic of Georgia (Aug. 24, 2008) - USS McFaul (DDG 74) pulled into the port of Batumi, Georgia, Aug. 24 to deliver humanitarian relief supplies to the country as part of the larger United States response to the government of Georgia request for humanitarian assistance.

    USCG Dallas (WHEC 716) and USS Mount Whitney (LCC/JCC 20) have also on-loaded humanitarian supplies destined for Georgia. Dallas left Souda Bay, Crete on Aug. 21. The ships will arrive in Georgia within a week. U.S. Navy C-9, C-40 and C-130 aircraft have flown tens of thousands of hygiene kits into the country over the past week.
CTF 152 began exercise Goalkeeper in Central and Southern Persian Gulf
U.S. Navy: Combined Task Force 152 Conducts Exercise Goalkeeper
  • Central and Southern Persian Gulf (Aug. 24-28, 2008) - Ships from Bahrain, the United Kingdom and the United States began exercise Goalkeeper in the Central and Southern Persian Gulf to train across the spectrum of Maritime Security Operations (MSO).

    Coalition units participating in the exercise include RBNS Al Fateh (PGGF 20), HMS Montrose (F 236) and USNS Catawba (T-ATF 168) as well as coalition maritime patrol aircraft.

  • Panama canal zone (Aug. 22, 2008) - Civil and military forces from 20 nations took part in FA PANAMAX. The exercise was conducted Aug. 11 - 22 in the Caribbean and Pacific approaches to the canal, while land forces participated at Comalapa Air Base in El Salvador and Soto Cano Air Base in Honduras.

    U.S. participation included more than 3,000 military personnel, seven Navy vessels – USS Tarawa (LHA 1), USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), USS Farragut (DDG 99), USS Kaufman (FFG 59), USS Devastator (MCM 6), USS Chief (MCM 14), and USCG Harriet Lane (WMEC 903).

  • Port Kelang, Malaysia (Aug. 21, 2008) - USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 14, USS Chancellorsville (CG 62), USS Gridley (DDG 101) departed Port Klang after routine port visits highlighted by displays of good will, community service and a variety of cultural tours.

    The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group has deployed in the U.S. 7th Fleet's area of responsibility as part of a routine deployment to promote peace, cooperation and stability in the region since May 19, '08.

  • San Diego (Aug. 21, 2008) - USS George Washington (CVN 73) departed following completed repair of fire damages, to replace USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) as the United States' only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier in Yokosuka, Japan.

    * GW completed all repairs at Naval Station Air North Island, Calif., Aug. 20
USS Kentucky returns to the Fleet
U.S. Navy: USS Kentucky Returns To The Fleet Early
  • PSNSY & IMF (Aug. 21, 2008) - USS Kentucky (SSBN 737) completed a drydocking for emergent maintenance at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNSY & IMF) Aug. 21, returning to the fleet three days earlier than scheduled.

    During Kentucky's Trident maintenance refit period, Navy divers discovered unforeseen but necessary maintenance work. This finding prompted a Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) assessment and recommendation for an unscheduled docking. Despite the challenges of this emergent work, the ship was docked and the Shipyard-IMF team successfully completed all repairs ahead of schedule.
USS Dallas returned to Groton
U.S. Navy: USS Dallas Returns from Deployment
  • Groton (Aug. 21, 2008) - USS Dallas returned after a highly successful six-month deployment to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.

    During the deployment, Dallas' Sailors served as ambassadors for the Navy while visiting ports in Diego Garcia; Lamissol, Cyprus; Bahrain; Gibraltar and Rota, Spain.

USS Ford's scheduled Sep. visit to Russia has been canceled
Navy Times: Second naval visit to Russia canceled
  • Navy Times (Aug. 20, 2008) - USS Ford (FFG 54)'s scheduled September visit to Russia has been canceled, because conflict between Russian and Georgian forces, the Navy officials said Aug. 20, 2008. Currently, Ford participate in SEACAT 2008 in Singapore Aug. 18-21. This is the second time in just over a week a joint U.S.-Russian operation has been canceled.

    On Aug. 13, U.S. Navy pulled out of Operation FRUKUS too.

  • Milwaukee (Aug. 20, 2008) - U.S. Navy announced the Navy's newest ship, the future USS Freedom (LCS 1), will be commissioned Nov. 8 at Veteran's Memorial Park in Milwaukee.

    The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group is currently in the U.S. 7th Fleet's area of responsibility as part of a routine deployment to promote peace, cooperation and stability in the region.

  • Singapore (Aug. 18, 2008) - The seventh annual Southeast Asia Cooperation Against Terrorism (SEACAT) exercise began in Singapore, Aug. 18.

    SEACAT brings 6 southeast countries (Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand. Additionally, Indonesian observers) together for simultaneous bilateral exercises with the United States.

    U.S. ships involved in the exercises include Tortuga, USS Howard (DDG 83), USS Ford (FFG 54), USCGC Morgenthau (WHEC 722) and USNS Safeguard (T-ARS 50), USNS 1st Lt. Baldomero Lopez (T-AK 3010) and USNS Cpl. Louis J. Hauge (T-AK 3011). In addition, a U.S. P-3C from VP-16 is participating in the exercise.

    * Tortuga, Howard, Ford, Safeguard and Morgenthau participate in the exercise following CARAT 2008.

  • Florida coast (Aug. 16, 2008) - USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) conduct a 10,000-pound underwater explosion shock test off the Florida coast. The test is part of U.S. Navy trials for the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship. The 3rd San Antonio-class ship was commissioned on Dec. 15, 2007.

    * For U.S., Russian, French, U.K. naval exercise "FRUKUS". FRUKUS is scheduled to begin in later this week off Russia's Pacific coast.

Boeing: Boeing's 1st P-8A Poseidon Moves From Final Assembly to Preflight
  • Renton, Wash. (Aug. 12, 2008) - Boeing Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) and Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) completed final assembly on the first P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft for the U.S. Navy.

    U.S. Navy plans to purchase 108 P-8As to replace its fleet of P-3C. Initial operational capability is slated for 2013.

U.S. Navy: Twenty Nations Kick Off Fuerzas Aliadas PANAMAX 2008
  • Panama city, Panama (Aug. 11, 2008) - A formal opening ceremony for Fuerzas Aliadas (FA) PANAMAX 2008, a U.S. Southern Command joint and multinational training exercise cosponsored with the government of Panama, was held in Panama City Aug. 11.

    Fuerzas Aliadas PANAMAX 2008 is taking place in the waters off the coasts of Panama and on land in El Salvador and Honduras from Aug. 11-22 with participation of civil and military forces from 20 countries.

    Fuerzas Aliadas PANAMAX 2008 participating nations include: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, the United States and Uruguay. France, Mexico, Paraguay, and Spain are scheduled to participate as observers. The Conference of Central American Armies, the Organization of American States and the United Nations will also participate.

McFaul is in the U.S. 6th Fleet AOR and will support theater security cooperation by participating in regional exercises with allies, making diplomatic port calls and responding to any contingency.

  • Red Sea (Aug. 11, 2008) - Sailors and Marines aboard USS Peleliu (LHA 5) enjoyed a well-deserved leisure time during a swim call and steel beach picnic.

    Peleliu ESG and 15th MEU departed San Diego May 4 on a regularly scheduled deployment to the U.S. 7th and 5th Fleet areas of operation for OIF, OEF, MSO.

    Maritime security operations (MSO) help develop security in the maritime environment, which promotes stability and global prosperity. These operations complement the counterterrorism and security efforts of regional nations and seek to disrupt violent extremists' use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material. Actually, Peleliu stopped a pirate attack in Gulf of Aden on Aug. 8.

    Peleliu ESG is consist of USS Peleliu (LHA 5), USS Dubuque (LPD 8), USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52), USS Cape St. George (CG 71), USS Halsey (DDG 97), USS Benfold (DDG 65) and 15th MEU.

USS Peleliu stopped a pirate attack

  • Gulf of Aden (Aug. 8, 2008) - USS Peleliu (LHA 5) stopped a pairate attack on a merchant vessel "Gem of Kilakari ". Peleliu responded to a call for help from the "Gem of Kilakari" on Aug. 8 morning, the U.S. Navy said. The vessel said it was under attack from armed pirates as it was traveling to the Suez Canal.

    Suspected pirate ships fled on the scene after the Peleliu launched three helicopters, U.S. Navy said, adding that one grenade landed on the vessel's bridge wing but didn't explode, and no injuries were reported.

    Peleliu is deployed as part of Peleliu ESG in U.S. 5th Fleet AOR.

  • Sangatesh, Afghanistan (Aug. 08, 2008) - U.S. Department of Defense announced Aug. 10 the death of a Sailor who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

    PO2 died Aug. 8, in Sangatesh, Afghanistan, from injuries suffered when his convoy vehicle hit an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the Naval Hospital Corps School in Great Lakes, Ill.

  • Tokyo, Japan (Aug. 8, 2008) - Japan Ministry of Defense announced that achievements of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) replenishment operations for OEF-MIO on Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean in July 2008. The operations is based on the Replenishment Support Special Measures Law.

    * Currently, The 2nd dispatch unit is conducting the operations. The 2nd unit is comprised of Mashu class oiler JS Mashu (AOE 425), Murasame class destroyer JS Ikazuchi (DD 107). Additonally, The 3rd dispatch unit departed from JMSDF Sasebo base on July 24 as relieve unit. The 3rd unit is comprised of Towada class oiler JS Hamana (AOE 424), Murasame class destroyer JS Yudachi (DD 103).

  • San Diego (Aug. 7, 2008) - USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) arrives in San Diego. Kitty Hawk will be decommissioned next year in Bremerton, Wash. The 46- year-old carrier is the oldest active-duty warship in the Navy and will be replaced this summer by USS George Washington (CVN 73) as the Navy's only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier.

This will be the final exercise for Tarawa, which is slated for decommissioning in early 2009. FA PANAMAX 2008 is a multi-national training exercise tailored to the defense of the Panama Canal, involving civil and military forces from the U. S. Southern Command area of focus.

  • Pearl Harbor (Aug. 5, 2008) - USS Lake Erie (CG 70) hosted a tri-lateral search and rescue exercise (SAREX) alongside Coast Guard cutter USCGC Kittiwake, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF) destroyer JS Haruna (DDH 141) and the Republic of Korea (ROK) destroyer ROKS Munmu the Great (DDH 976).

    Following the recent completion of Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2008, the exercise served as a last training exercise before the two visiting nations departed across the Pacific Ocean and back to their homes.

    Farragut will participate with USS Kauffman (FFG 59) and USS Tarawa (LHA 1), in conjunction with DESRON 40 and HSL-42 Det. 7. TSC missions, which encompass an important part of the POA 2008 deployment.

    USS Kauffman, with HSL-42 Det 7 embarked, is assigned to Destroyer Squadron 40 and is currently deployed in support of Partnership of the Americas 2008 (POA 08) operations.

U.S. Navy: USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group Departs Japan
  • Sasebo, Yokosuka and Fukuoka, Japan (Jul. 31- Aug. 1) - Four ships and more than 5,000 Sailors of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 7 departed Japan, July 31 and August 1, after routine port visits marked by numerous displays of good will and community service throughout the country.

    USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), embarked CVW 14 and USS Howard (DDG 83) left Sasebo, while USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) departed Yokosuka, and USS Gridley (DDG 101) departed Fukuoka.

    The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group is currently in the U.S. 7th Fleet's area of responsibility as part of a routine deployment to promote peace, cooperation and stability in the region. Homeported in San Diego.

  • Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (Aug. 1, 2008) - USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) departs from Pearl Harbor after participating in Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2008. Kitty Hawk is the U.S. Navy's oldest active duty warship. Moreover, the only U.S. Navy's active duty conventional-powered aircraft carrier.

    Kitty Hawk will be replaced this summer by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) as the U.S. Navy's only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier.

The Growler is the U.S. Navy's newest aircraft and a replacement for the EA-6B Prowler. Eisenhower is conducting carrier qualifications after completing a six-month planned incremental availability at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
