  • San Diego (July 30, 2008) - USS Tarawa (LHA 1) is preparing for its upcoming participation in exercise "Fuerzas Aliadas PANAMAX 2008". The exercise likely to be the ship's final deployment. Tarawa is scheduled to be decommissioned next spring (perhaps, Mar. 2009).

    * DESRON 40 also will participate in PANAMAX 2008. DESRON 40 is comprised of USS Farragut (DDG 99) and USS Kauffman (FFG 59).
GW skipper and XO were relieved
U.S. Navy: USS George Washington Investigation Complete, Senior Leadership Relieved
  • Naval station North island (July 30, 2008) - Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Adm. Robert F. Willard, issued a final endorsement to the investigation of a fire that occurred aboard USS George Washington (GW) (CVN 73) on May 22. As directed by Adm. Willard, Commander, Naval Air Forces Pacific, Vice Adm. Thomas J. Kilcline, Jr., relieved GW skipper Capt. David C. Dykhoff and XO Capt. David M. Dober

    Capt. J.R. Haley, previously assigned as Deputy Chief of Staff to Commander, U.S. Pacific Command, has taken command of GW. And Capt. Karl O. Thomas is assigned as new GW XO.

    The investigation determined that the likely cause of the fire was unauthorized smoking in unmanned auxiliary boiler exhaust and supply space that ignited flammable liquids and other combustible material improperly stored in an adjacent space.

    Repairs to GW are nearly complete and she will depart San Diego, Calif., on Aug. 21, with an arrival in Yokosuka, Japan expected in late Sep. GW's turnover with USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), will begin upon Kitty Hawk's arrival in San Diego on Aug. 7.

  • Odessa, Ukraine (July 28, 2008) - Exercise Sea Breeze 2008 concluded. 16 Ships including USS McFaul (DDG 74), 17 aircraft and more than 2,000 personnel from 16 countries participated in various exercises.

    Nations participating in this 11th anniversary of Exercise Sea Breeze include host country Ukraine as well as Armenia, Azerbaijan, Canada, Denmark, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Macedonia, Norway, Romania, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

  • Fukuoka, Sasebo, and Yokosuka, Japan (July 28, 2008) - Reagan CSG arrived in Japan for a routine port visit.

    The strike group's flagship, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), embarked Carrier Air Wing 14 (CVW), USS Howard (DDG 83) pulled into Sasebo, while USS Thach (FFG 43), USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) stopped in Yokosuka, and USS Gridley (DDG 101) anchored in Fukuoka (Hakata).

  • Darwin, Australia (July 27, 2008) - Military Sealift Command Hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) arrived in Darwin, Australia, at the mid-point of Pacific Partnership 2008 and right after a 13-day humanitarian civic assistance in Dili, Timor-Leste.

    * Mercy deployed from San Diego on May 1, And the deployment is expected to last approximately four months.
The skipper of USS Pearl Harbor was relieved
Navy Times: Amphib skipper fired after grounding in gulf
  • Persian gulf (July 27, 2008) - The skipper of USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) was relieved July 27 after running aground July 21 while the ship was operating off the coast of Kuwait, Persian Gulf. No injuries or damage occurred as a result of the incident. Pearl Harbor deployed from San Diego on May 4 as part of Peleliu ESG.

    Cmdr. Xavier F. Valverde was relieved by Rear Adm. Kendall Card, commander of the ESG. Card tapped Capt. Mike Slotsky to replace Valverde as Pearl Harbor’s commanding officer. Slotsky is listed as the executive officer of DESRON 9.

    * Currently, DESRON 9 is deployed as part of Lincoln CSG in 5th fleet AOR.

  • Surabaya, Indonesia (July 26, 2008) - An annual naval engagement activity (NEA) between the United States and Indonesia concluded.

    U.S. ships participating in the NEA included USS Tortuga (LSD 46), USNS Safeguard (T-ARS 50), USS Ford (FFG 54) and USS Jarrett (FFG 33).

    The NEA is part of an annual series of bilateral maritime training exercises between the United States and several Southeast Asian nations designed to build relationships and enhance the operational readiness of the participating forces.

  • Juneau, Alaska (July 26-July 30, 2008) - USS Juneau (LPD 10) make a historic visit to its namesake city of Juneau, Alaska, July 26 through July 30 as part of the state’s 50th anniversary of becoming a part of the United States.

    Juneau stop in Juneau en route to San Diego for its deactivation from its homeport of Sasebo, Japan where it has spent the last nine years as part of the U.S. Navy’s forward deployed naval forces.
USS Momsen makes a two days port visit in Cyprus

  • Limassol, Cyprus (July 27, 2008) - USS Momsen (DDG 92) departed July 27 after a two-day port visit to Limassol, Cyprus.

    During the visit, Momsen hosted seven members of the Cypriot Navy, including Cypriot Navy Deputy Commander, Capt. Andreas Loannides. They toured the ship's pilot house, including all navigation systems, the combat information center and an exhibition of two embarked SH-60B helicopters.

    Following the tour, Cypriot Navy officials hosted an informal dinner reception for the commanding officers and executive officers of Momsen and USS Dallas (SSN 700), a U.S. submarine also visiting Limassol.

    Momsen is part of Lincoln CSG, which is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations to support Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom as well as Maritime Security Operations.

  • Tokyo, Japan (July 25, 2008) - JMSDF announced that they will dispatch Oyashio-class submarine JS Makishio (SS 593), commander CDR. Makoto YOSHIDA, Submarine Flotilla 1, for various exercises in U.S. Navy facility, Hawaii. The exercises are designed to increase tactical capability. Makishio will depart from JMSDF Kure base on Aug. 1, and return to base on Nov. 12 via Guam.

    Updated (July 31, 2008) - JMSDF announced that they changed the schedule of Makishio. The submarine will depart on Aug. 6 from Kure.

    The massive project to perform maintenance and upgrade systems on the submarine began in April 2007. The work package comprised nearly 202,000 man-days of work.

Tests focus on RMS and ship interoperability, specifically functions with the ship's crew and architecture; such as its launch and recovery system, computers, consoles, and sonar control and the tests will help train and qualify Det. 1 crew members in preparation for their embarkation on LCS-1 Freedom after commissioning this fall.

  • USS Lassen (DDG 82) and USS McCampbell (DDG 85) participate in a Maritime Counter Special Operations Forces exercise with the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy. The exercise strengthens the two countries’ abilities to fight in a complex multithreat environment consisting of anti-submarine, anti-air, and anti-surface threats, to improve the integration of coastal sites and flex joint U.S. Navy, Army and Air Force capabilities with the ROK Navy and Air Force.

  • Hawaii (July 24, 2008) - Aug. 1, U.S. Navy announced that a small radioactive leak aboard USS Houston (SS 713) was confirmed during scheduled maintenance in dry dock on July 24.

    "One of the shut valves associated with the boat's propulsion system was "weeping" water at a rate higher than design specifications" said Lt. Cmdr. David Benham, spokesman for Naval Submarine Forces Pacific at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

    "At no time was there any risk to the reactor plant, the safety of the crew or the safety of the public," he said.

  • Kuwaiti coast (July 18, 2008) - A civilian Kuwaiti vessel with four people on board sank 15 miles off the Kuwaiti coast.

    The Kuwaiti Navy Operations Center contacted CMF headquarters and requested SAR support. Kuwaiti officials coordinated all diplomatic clearance arrangements for the operation.

    CTF 158 took the lead of the mission and began SAR operations, dispatching USCGC Wrangell (WPB 1332) and a SH-70B-2 helicopter from HMAS Stuart (FFH 153). The SH-70B-2 located the four survivors and kept them in sight until Wrangell arrived on the scene to recover the four. All were reported in good condition, suffering only from minor exposure.

  • Coast of Oman (July 18, 2008) - French frigate FS Surcouf (F711) under the command of Cmdr. Pierre Vandier, operating as part of CTF 150, provided assistance to the Panamanian-flagged Motor Vessel Karam Allah, which suffered engine failure nine days earlier after it ran out of fuel off the coast of Oman.

    CTF 150 conducts MSO from the Red Sea to the Strait of Hormuz through the Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, and the Northern Arabian Sea. Countries such as Canada, France, Germany, Pakistan, U.K. and the United States regularly contribute forces to CTF 150.

    * JMSDF has deployed replenishment units since Jan. 2008 for support to CTF-150. Currently, second replenishment unit is operating. The unit consists of JS Mashu (AOE 425), JS Ikazuchi (DD 107). And third unit will depart on July 24. The third unit is comprised of JS Hamana (AOE 424), JS Yudachi (DD 103).

  • Norfolk (July 18, 2008) - USS Cole (DDG 67) returned at Naval Station Norfolk. Cole was deployed with the British Royal Navy's aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious and was the first U.S. Navy ship to sail under the command of a foreign battle group. Additionally, the ship participated in BALTOPS 2008.

  • Yokosuka, Japan (July 17, 2008) - Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Japan (CNFJ) July 24 announced that the repairs on the USS George Washington (CVN 73) are going well and are expected to be complete in late August. At that time the ship will go to sea to commence the certification process for the air wing and the ship in order to be fully mission capable prior to her transit to Yokosuka, Japan.

    This schedule will enable the ship to arrive in Yokosuka, Japan in late September and subsequently participate in the International Fleet Review in Korea in October and the ANNUALEX exercise with the JMSDF later in the year (Oct. or Nov.).

The MQ-8B demonstration took place aboard the USS Stethem (DDG-51) and The demonstration is the first time in outside of the United States.
JTFEX 08-4 "Operation Brimstone" will take place

  • Atlantic coast (July 21-July 31, 2008) - More than 15,000 service members from four countries will participate in Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX) 08-4 "Operation Brimstone", July 21-31 in North Carolina and off the eastern U.S. coast from Virginia to Florida.

    JTFEX 08-4 serves as a ready-for-deployment certification event for the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TR CSG) and the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group (IWO ESG). The exercise will also serve as a Joint Task Force Capable Headquarters sustainment event. In addition, JTFEX 08-4 will offer preliminary accreditation for 2nd Fleet's Maritime Headquarters with Maritime Operations Center (MHQ with MOC)). MHQ with MOC is a new approach to command and control for fleet commanders.

    The exercise also marks the first time that forces from NECC are participating in an East-Coast JTFEX. NECC forces operating in the littorals and riverine environment are supporting integrated operations.

    U.S. and coalition naval assets underway for the exercise include USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) with associated units including HMS Ark Royal (RO 7), BNS Greenhalgh (F-46), FS Amethyste (S 605). BNS Greenhalgh is the first Brazilian Navy ship to operate integrated in a U.S. strike group.

    French Rafale fighter aircraft assigned to the 12th Squadron, and Hawkeye early warning aircraft assigned to the 4th Squadron will conduct carrier qualifications and cyclic flight operations with U.S. CVW 8 during TR CSG's JTFEX. This marks the first integrated U.S. and French carrier qualifications and cyclic flight operations aboard a U.S. aircraft carrier.

    TR CSG is made up of: USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), CCSG-2, CVW-8), CDS-22, USS Monterey (CG 61), USS Mason (DDG 87), USS Nitze (DDG 94), USS Springfield (SSN 761), USS The Sullivans (DDG 68).

    The IWO ESG consists of USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), CPR-4, 26th MEU, USS San Antonio (LPD 17), USS Vella Gulf (CG 72), USS Ramage (DDG 61), USS Carter Hall (LSD 50), USS Roosevelt (DDG 80), USS Hartford (SSN 768).

    The Navy Expeditionary Combat Task Group (NECTG) is made up of: Riverine Group 1 staff augmented with personnel from throughout the NECC force, RIVRON 1, an air detachment from NMCB 11, NCHB 3, and EODU 6 plus EOD Support Unit.

    In addition, the following forces are participating in the exercise simulating opposition forces: USS Carney (DDG 64), USS San Jacinto (CG 56), USS Anzio (CG 68), USS Normandy (CG 60), USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79), USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81), USS Carr (FFG 52).

  • Panama canal (July 9-July 11) - Assigned to DESRON 40, USS Farragut (DDG 99) and USS Kauffman (FFG 59) transited the Panama Canal en route Mayport.

    The transit from the Pacific to Atlantic Ocean via the Panama Canal was the final evolution of the first half of Partnership of the Americas 2008 (POA 08).

    Following a two-week maintenance availability period in Mayport, Farragut and Kauffman will kick off the second half of POA 08. It will include Theater Security Cooperation visits in Jamaica and Columbia followed by participation in the 2008 PANAMAX exercise.

  • Odessa, Ukraine (July 11, 2008) - 14 Ships including USS McFaul (DDG 74), 17 aircraft and more than 2,200 personnel from 16 countries have been arriving Odessa since July 11 as part of Combined Task Force (CTF) 367 in support of Exercise Sea Breeze.

    The exercise includes enhancing multinational interoperability, developing Black Sea-nation maritime security capabilities and improving involvement in Navy Europe's larger Black Sea theater security cooperation strategy. The exercise, scheduled to continue through July 26.

  • Eastern Pacific Ocean (July 11, 2008) - While on patrol, USS De Wert (FFG 45) with embarked detachments, HSL-46 Det. 1, Coast Guard LEDET 103, and Colombian Navy ship Buenaventura interdicted two go-fast vessels, each carrying over one ton of cocaine.

    De Wert is currently deployed in Latin America under the operational control of U.S. NAVSO/U.S. 4th Fleet.

Japan MoD: Achievements of JMSDF Activities Based on the Replenishment Support Special Measures Law
  • Tokyo, Japan (July 10, 2008) - Japan Ministry of Defense announced that achievements during the month of June 2008 of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) replenishment operations for OEF-MIO. The operations is based on the Replenishment Support Special Measures Law.

    * Currently, The second dispatched unit is conducting the operations in Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. The unit is comprised of oiler JS Mashu (AOE 425) and destoyer JS Ikazuchi (DD 107).

  • Sasebo, Japan (July 10, 2008) - Crews of the USS Denver (LPD 9) and USS Juneau (LPD 10) swapped hulls in an exchange of command ceremony aboard Denver July 10. Denver provides the FDNF with a newly modernized and renovated warship capable. and Juneau is scheduled to sail to San Diego for decommissioning.

  • Yokosuka, Japan (July 08, 2008) - Due to ongoing repairs, the originally scheduled arrival of USS George Washington (CVN 73) to Yokosuka, Japan, will be delayed past August 2008. The swap-out between USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) and USS George Washington will take place in San Diego, following Kitty Hawk's participation in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise. Once that turnover is completed, Kitty Hawk will proceed to Bremerton, Washington, for her planned decommissioning.

    Repairs to George Washington are scheduled to be completed in late August. The plan for transit to Yokosuka, which will involve a number of standard operational certifications for the air wing and the ship, has not been finalized.

  • Tokyo, Japan (July 07, 2008) - According to JMSDF, Murasame-class destoryer JS Samidare (DD 106) assigned to 8th Escort Division, 4th Escort Flotilla, homported in Kure, will participate in exercise Kakadu during Jul. 21-Aug. 8. Kakadu is Australia-led multinational maritime exercise. Samidare will depart for Darwin, Australia from JMSDF Kure base on Jul. 9.

    * This participation is the first time as JMSDF.

Note

Coast of Shimokita Peninsula (3:30 a.m. JST on July 6) - A fire broken out in anchor gear room aboard the JMSDF destroyer Sawayuki (DD 125). But the fire was extinguished by the crew without any injuries and any serious damages after 10 min. Sawayuki was on its way from JMSDF Yokosuka base to JMSDF Ominato base. The ship is continuing as scheduled to Ominato base.

U.S. Navy: Vandegrift Returns from Milestone Deployment to Philippines
  • USS Vandegrift (FFG 48) returns to San Diego July 3 after a six-month deployment to the 7th Fleet in support of Joint Special Operations Task Force – Philippines.

    During their mission supporting the Global War on Terrorism, Vandegrift became the first U.S. Navy ship to make port visits to Cagayan de Oro, General Santos City, and Cotabato, Mindanao, Republic of the Philippines.

    While operating in the Philippines, the officers and crew conducted community relations projects, including a visit to an orphanage where Sailors played with and read to children. Vandegrift Sailors also refurbished a community basketball court, donated medicinal and hygienic items and toys.
