Super PUMA fly to Philippines from USNS Niagara Falls
June 29, Super PUMA helicopters fly much needed bottled water to Kalibo, Republic of the coast of Philippines from USNS Niagara Falls (T-AFS 3) in the wake of Typhoon Fengshen. At the request of the government of the Republic of the Philippines, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and elements of her CSG are off the coast of Panay Island providing humanitarian assistance and disaster response in the wake of Typhoon Fengshen. Reagan and other U.S. Navy ships are operating in the 7th Fleet AOR.
Typhoon Fengshen is called "台風6号" in Japan.
USS Norfolk (SSN 714) returns to Naval Station Norfolk
USS Norfolk (SSN 714) returns to Norfolk following a six month deployment. While on deployment, Norfolk completed several missions in support of national interests and the Navy's maritime strategy of sustained cooperative relationships with international partners.

USNS Grasp beginning a four-month deployment to the Caribbean.
USNS Grasp (T-ARS 51) departed NAB Little Creek in Norfolk June 27, beginning a four-month international outreach deployment to the Caribbean.
The deployment, called Navy Diver-Global Fleet Station (ND-GFS) 2008, is directed by the U.S. Southern Command and is designed to enhance maritime security in the region.
Global Fleet Station is an innovative U.S. Navy concept in which a ship is deployed overseas to serve as the platform for conducting operations with international partners. Global Fleet Station activities range from providing humanitarian assistance to exchanging valuable information on maritime operations.

USS Juneau (LPD 10) returned to Sasebo, Japan, June 26 for the last time before her hull swap with USS Denver (LPD 9) scheduled for July 2008. Juneau has been home ported in Sasebo, since July 1999, when she participated in the U.S. Navy's first hull swap with USS Dubuque (LPD 8). After the hull swap with Denver, The ship is scheduled to sail to San Diego for decommissioning.
JMSDF surface unit and submarine enters Pearl Harbor
June 25 - 26, Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) surface unit and submarine arrives in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on schedule for the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2008 exercise. the world's largest multinational exercise, is scheduled biennially by U.S. Pacific Fleet and takes place in the Hawaiian operating area during June 29 - July 31. Participants include Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, Netherlands, Peru, Republic of Korea, Singapore, United Kingdom and the U.S. India, Colombia, Mexico, and Russia are scheduled to send observers.
USS Boxer (LHD 4), along with various embarked units, returned to San Diego June 26, concluding nearly two months at sea in support of the Pacific phase of Continuing Promise 2008.
Continuing Promise is a collaborative effort between the United States and military partners, NGO and partner-nation support organizations aimed at building strong partnerships that can be called upon in the event of a regional situation requiring cooperative solutions.
The Pacific Phase of Continuing Promise is one of two Humanitarian Civic Assistance deployments planned for the USSOUTHCOM area of focus for 2008. The second Continuing Promise deployment will be conducted by USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) in the Caribbean.

USS Ronald Reagan and other U.S. Navy ships arrived on station near the central Philippine island of Panay June 25 to join the humanitarian assistance mission being led by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in the wake of damage caused by Typhoon Fengshen.
The ships on station in the Sulu Sea include USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), embarked CVW 14, USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) and 3 ships of DESRON 7, USS Howard (DDG 83), USS Gridley (DDG 101), USS Thach (FFG 43). Also providing assistance to the AFP in their efforts are USNS GySgt. Frank Stockham (T-AK 3017) and USNS Safeguard (T-ARS 50), which have been assisting in the recovery operations of the sunken ferry Princess of the Stars.
Yokosuka, Japan - USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) successfully compeleted the Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) June 25, marking the end of a three-day inspection of the ship's spaces and equipment.

East Pacific (June 25, 2008) MH-60S Seahawk assigned to HSC 8 transports ordnance crates from USNS Alan B. Shepard (T-AKE 3) to USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). Stennis is receiving ammunition to prepare for a deployment in early 2009. Stennis is transiting from San Diego to her homeport of Bremerton, Wash. following a rigorous two-month work-up period.

U.S. DoD announced June 22 the death of a U.S. Navy Hospitalman who was supporting OEF.
The hospitalman was assigned to 1st Marine Div. Det., Twentynine, Calif.
He died June 20 while conducting combat operations in Farah Province, Afghanistan.
Reagan Carrier Strike Group (CSG) departed Hong Kong, June 22, after four days in port. The port is the first stop for the strike group in its 2008 Western Pacific deployment.
The CSG includes the flagship USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), embarked CVW 14, and the ships of DESRON 7, USS Chancellorsville (CG 62), USS Decatur (DDG 73), USS Howard (DDG 83), USS Gridley (DDG 101), USS Thach (FFG 43).
20-21 June, 3 ships of Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) offload the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) in White Beach Naval Facility, Okinawa, Japan after a successful spring patrol.
Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2008 entered a new phase with Republic of Singapore Fleet Headquarters, June 23.
This phase will feature Singapore and U.S. forces working together in several tactical situations including maritime interdictions, VBSS exercises, air defense, surface gunnery, force protection and diving/salvage operations.
USNS Safeguard (T-ARS 50) will also participate in the exercises and will provide surface-supplied breathing equipment to support depth diving-enabling challenging salvaging scenarios.
CARAT is an annual series of bilateral military exercises between the United States and Southeast Asian nations.
UNITAS 49-08, an annual multinational exercise conducted to enhance interoperability and mutual cooperation between navies, began off the coast of Callao, Peru, June 21.
The multinational exercise brings together nations with common interests in the Americas, and includes Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and the United States. Mexico participated in this year's Atlantic phase of UNITAS as an observer.
Staff elements from USNAVSO, DESRON 40, USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), USS Farragut (DDG 99), USS Kauffman (FFG 59), USCG International Training Division and personnel from the USMC participated in this year's UNITAS Pacific Phase.
UNITAS 49-08 is part of Partnership of Americas, an ongoing engagement operation sponsored by USSOUTHCOM. It is carried out under the operational control of the Mayport, Fla.-based USNAVSO The commander of DESRON 40, Capt. Rodelio Laco, leads the deployment as commander, Task Group 40.0.

U.S. Department of Defense announced June 19 the death of two U.S Navy sailors who were supporting OEF. Hospitalman and PO1 died June 18 as a result of enemy rocket attack in northern Paktika province, Afghanistan. They were assigned to PRT Sharana in Afghanistan.
USS Kitty Hawk and USS George Washington changed original schedule
USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) and USS George Washington (CVN 73) turnover originally planned for early June in Pearl Harbor will now take place in San Diego in August as a result of the fire that occurred aboard GW on May 22.
Kitty Hawk will then proceed to Bremerton, Wash., to complete her decommissioning on schedule. GW's schedule has not yet been determined.
U.S. Navy assessment of GW's damage is substantially complete. And the repair work is being performed by U.S. Navy Shipyards and by private-sector shipyards in the San Diego area. An estimated completion date, as well as an estimated timeframe for GW's arrival in Yokosuka, Japan, has yet to be determined.

The MSC hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) is anchored off the coast of Nha Trang June 19 for a Pacific Partnership mission in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. This mission involves partnerships with the armed forces of Vietnam, Vietnamese health care professionals, and local government officials.
Doha, Qatar (June 19) - Lt. Joseph W. Cortopassi, center, the Air Boss aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS Dubuque (LPD 8), helps serve ice cream to students of the Dahil Model Independent School. The students toured Dubuque during the ship's port visit to Doha. Dubuque is deployed with the Peleliu Strike Group to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility supporting maritime security operations.
JASDF Gifu Air base, Japan (June 19, 2008) - First test flight of the 2nd prototype XP-1 was successfully completed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Inc.) Technical Research and Development Institute (TRDI), Japan MoD plans to have completed the test and evaluation for XP-1 by 2011.
The next generation maritime patrol aircraft XP-1 will developed to replace JMSDF P-3Cs and provide increased capability in long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare.

New Hampshire (SSN 778) will be christened June 21
The U.S Navy's newest submarine New Hampshire (SSN 778) will be christened Saturday, June 21, at Electric Boat in Groton, Conn.
The fifth Virginia-class submarine, New Hampshire is the third ship to honor the Granite State.
Nassau Expeditionary Strike Group reentered the Mediterranean, June 18, to conduct maritime security operations (MSO) in regional waters and theater security cooperation efforts. Nassau ESG is comprised of USS Nassau (LHA 4), USS Nashville (LPD 13), USS Ashland (LSD 48), USS Ross (DDG 71), USS Bulkeley (DDG 84), USS Philippine Sea (CG 58), USS Albany (SSN 753).
USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) visited Aksaz, Turkey, June 15-18, following three months in the Navy's 5th Fleet area of operations in support of theater security cooperation objectives and Maritime Security Operations (MSO).
Philippine Sea is one of six vessels in the Nassau Expeditionary Strike Group currently deployed in the Navy's 6th Fleet area of operations supporting MSO. MSO help develop security in the maritime environment, which promotes stability and global prosperity.

TOKYO, Japan (June 17, 2008) - Defense Minister Ishiba announced Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) destroyer Sazanami (DD 113) will make a goodwill port visit to Zhanjiang, People's Republic of China (PRC) where the Headquarters of the Southern Fleet of the Chinese Navy is located on June 24. The port visit to PRC is the first time as JMSDF.
Sazanami is scheduled to depart on June 19 for a five-days port visit.

June 16, U.S. Navy has released the identity of the pilot killed when his F/A-18C crashed near NAS Fallon on June 13.
Lieutenant died following a collision between his aircraft and an F-5 during a routine training mission near NAS Fallon. He was assigned to VFA-15 based at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach.
The F-5 is assigned to VFC-13 based at NAS Fallon. 2 pilots ejected safely and were picked up by a search and rescue helicopter.
The cause of the mishap is under investigation.

Former President George H.W. Bush visited USS Ashland (LSD 48) Rhodes, Greek, June 15. Ashland is part of the Nassau Expeditionary Strike Group, currently operating in 6th Fleet AOR to support maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts.
Nassau ESG is comprised of USS Nassau (LHA 4), USS Nashville (LPD 13), USS Ashland (LSD 48), USS Philippine Sea (CG 58), USS Ross (DDG 71), USS Bulkeley (DDG 84), USS Albany (SSN 753) .
The Thailand phase of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2008, ended with a closing ceremony at Sattahip Naval Base, June 16, following five days of exercises at sea.
Ships participating in CARAT include USS Tortuga (LSD 46), USS Jarrett (FFG 33), USS Ford (FFG 54), USNS Safeguard and USCGC Morgenthau (WHEC 722). A detachment from NMCB 133 is embarked on Tortuga, and a unit from Hawaii's 3rd Marine Reg., Combat Assault Company is also participating in the exercises.
CARAT is an annual series of bilateral military exercises between the United States and Southeast Asia nations designed to promote operational readiness and cooperation.

USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) received supplies from USNS Concord (T-AFS 5) near Cotabato, Philippines, June 13. Mercy is participating in Pacific Partnership 2008.

Tokyo, Japan (June 10, 2008) - Japan Ministry of Defense reported achievements during the month of May 2008 of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) replenishment operations for OEF-MIO. The operations is based on the Replenishment Support Special Measures Law.
Currently, The second dispatched unit is conducting the operations in Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. The unit is comprised of oiler Mashu (AOE 425) and destoyer Ikazuchi (DD 107).
USS Norfolk (SSN 714) departs Souda harbor, Crete, Greek June 10 after a routine port visit. Norfolk is on a scheduled six-month independent deployment operating in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.

Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet announced June 9 USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) will replace USS George Washington (CVN 73) in RIMPAC 2008.
A fire occurred onboard GW on May 22 while the ship was at sea. The ship is currently in port at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, conducting repairs to spaces and equipment affected by the fire. The timeline for repairs to the ship has not yet been determined.
USS Crommelin (FFG 37) returns to homeport at Naval Station Pearl Harbor on June 8 after a six-and-half month deployment to Latin America and the Eastern Pacific. Crommelin conducted monitoring, detecting, counter-narcotics activities and participated in community relation projects.
USS Tortuga (LSD 46) arrives at Sattahip, Thailand June 8 from a recent CARAT exercise in the Philippines. CARAT is an annual series of bilateral maritime training exercises between the United States and six Southeast Asian nations designed to build relationships and enhance the operational readiness of the participating forces.
U.S. Navy ships and one U.S. Coast Guard Cutter arrived at Sattahip Naval Base in Thailand June 8 to begin the Thailand phase of the 14th CARAT.

SNMG2 is currently comprised of warships from Turkey, U.S.A., the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Greece. And commanded by Rear Adm. Sinan Ertugrul, Turkish Navy, embarked on the flagship, TCG Salihreis (F 246).

GdyniaY, Poland - 13 nation's sailors from NATO and non-NATO participants (including Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.) will arrive in Gdynia, Poland, June 9, to kick off the 36th annual maritime exercise Baltic Operations (BALTOPS) 2008.
BALTOPS 2008 is an individual combined maritime and land exercise in the Baltic Sea. The mission of BALTOPS 2008 is to promote mutual understanding, confidence, cooperation, and interoperability among forces and personnel of participating nations and support national unit and staff training objectives through a series of robust exercises.
U.S. Navy RADM. Daniel P. Holloway, commander, CSG 12 will supervise the exercise from the flagship USS Gettysburg (CG 64). Other U.S. Navy units participating include USS Cole (DDG 67), and USNS Patuxent (TAO 201).
