The F/A-18E's show of force, emphasized by an expenditure of flares, caused enemy fire to cease as they fled the area.
  • In Gereshk (Google Maps), an F/A-18F (VFA 103) conducted shows of force to aid a unit that had been attacked by anti-Afghan forces with indirect fire and automatic weapons. The aircraft also performed tactical reconnaissance for ground forces operating in the area.
Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR)
  • 22 USAF ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. In addition, 3 U.S. Navy and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.
Iraq - Operation Iraqi Freedom

JMSDF continues an antipiracy operation
Joint Staff: 派遣海賊対処水上部隊の出港について (Jun. 30, '09 release) pdf_icon.gif
  • Tokyo, Japan (Jun. 30, 2009) - Joint Staff reports that JS Harusame (DD 102), JS Amagiri (DD 154) and other units will depart to the Gulf of Aden Jul. 6 as a relief unit of the antipiracy operation.

Currently, JS Samidare (DD 106), JS Sazanami (DD 113) and other units have operated in the Gulf of Aden as the 1st antipiracy maritime force since arrival at the scene Mar. 30.

JMSDF can't escort and protect foreign vessels except emergencies outside Japan territory due to limitation of existing law, however Jun. 19, the Diet enacted the antipiracy law authorizing JMSDF to escort and protect any nations vessels outside Japan territory. In addition, a severe ROE on weapon usages is eased.

Thus, the 2nd antipiracy maritime force will be operating under the law.

Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 73 close-air-support missions
  • In the vicinity of Lashkar Gah/Laskar Gah (Google Maps), a coalition aircraft and an F/A-18E (VFA 143) employed GBU-12 and -38 munitions to target enemy forces engaging Afghan and coalition military personnel. The strikes destroyed enemy fighting positions in a compound and in a tree line, ending RPG and automatic weapons fire coming from those spots. Later, a coalition aircraft flew a show of force over a friendly convoy to prevent it from being attacked.
  • An F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131) dropped a GBU-12 against a hostile fighting position in Sangin (Google Maps) after coalition personnel detected an enemy group there armed with RPGs, assault weapons and a recoilless rifle preparing to attack. The strike destroyed the position and prevented the enemy attack from taking place.

The bomb closed the cave and eliminated the hostile position's threat to Afghan security force personnel. In a separate engagement in the same area, a USAF B-1B and a U.S. Navy F/A-18E (VFA 143) conducted shows of force preventing an enemy attack after a group of anti-Afghan forces was spotted readying for an ambush.

Insurgents with RPG launchers and machine guns opened fire on two different convoys passing through the area from civilian residential compounds. To avoid danger to Afghan civilians and their property, the ground forces commander opted to employ a show of force rather than use airstrikes.
  • In Orgun (Google Maps), an F-18 (CVW 7) conducted a show of force over a treeline and expended flares after a coalition convoy spotted enemy personnel preparing for an attack there. The flyover prevented a confrontation, allowing the convoy to proceed without interference.

AFCENT, USAF: Airpower Summary for June 20
Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom
Coalition Airpower conducted 74 close-air-support missions
  • USAF F-15Es and a B-1B along with a U.S. Navy F/A-18F (VFA 103) responded to a firefight near Shurakian (Google Maps). Employing strafes and GBU munitions, the aircraft targeted enemy personnel dug in along a ridgeline, routing them, and then tracked them into positions in a treeline where the jets delivered additional strikes. The aircraft came in again when the origin point for enemy RPG fire was discovered, destroying that firing position. After an extended engagement, enemy forces were forced to retreat having suffered severe casualties.
  • A lengthy engagement in Now Zad (Google Maps) resulted in a Navy F/A-18C[N] (VFA 83 or 131), a USMC AV-8B and a Coalition aircraft being called in to provide air support. During the fight, aircraft spotted and tracked enemy forces that had been firing mortars at a Coalition unit. The aircraft followed them to a building previously identified as an enemy weapons cache, destroyed the structure, then hit additional enemy personnel with RPGs as they attempted to move to alternate fighting positions. Additional strikes uprooted a supporting enemy force dug in along a treeline and exchanging fire with a Coalition ground unit, then hit a number of armed enemy personnel attempting to escape from the battle.
  • In Qalat (Google Maps), a Super Hornet (VFA 103 or 143) conducted a show of force after a roadside bomb disabled a Coalition convoy vehicle. The aircraft stayed to provide cover as soldiers moved the vehicle's equipment and passengers to another vehicle.
  • Near Gereshk (Google Maps), an F/A-18A (-C[N]?) provided back up to an Afghan National Police unit taking enemy fire. The aircraft carried out a show of force and expended flares to drive off the attacking gunmen.
  • Super Hornets (VFA 103 or 143) and USAF F-15Es flew shows of force over Tarin Kowt (Google Maps) and Bagram (Google Maps) respectively, expending several flares for increased deterrent value. The aircraft preempted enemy forces from conducting attacks on convoys travelling through those locations.
Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR)
